Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Whitehead.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started welding in high school and never looked back. After trade school, I hit the road as a traveling pipe welder and spent years chasing work across 20-plus states and more than 50 locations. Plants, shutdowns, expansions, new construction. I ended up specializing in food and beverage, where sanitary tubing and orbital welding have to meet some of the toughest standards in the industry.
Along the way I got to know some of the best specialized welders in the country. In March 2023, I took that experience and started Specialty Welding Services in Warrenton, Missouri. Instead of carrying a fixed crew, I hand-select the right team for every project based on the work and the location.
Today SWS has the certifications, insurance, and compliance programs Fortune 500 plants require, and we’ve stepped in where larger contractors needed help hitting deadlines and quality specs other shops couldn’t meet. I’m a welder first, and I built this company so the work always gets done by the right people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Welding didn’t come easy for me. I had to fight to learn it, in school and on the job. I came up in some of the most demanding industries, working alongside some of the roughest crews on the road. Every new job started with a hands-on, pass-or-fail weld test, and once you were hired, your welds were scrutinized every day. Short-term jobs, tight deadlines, and dangerous shutdowns were just the norm. You earned your spot every time, or you went home.
I wanted more out of myself and out of this industry, so I started Specialty Welding Services. Nobody handed me a name, so I had to earn one. I built SWS on top-tier work, professionalism, and some of the fastest response times in the business.
The early days were a grind. I floated customers’ projects on 60-90 day payment terms. I followed other contractors to repair their work. I fought to stand out in a crowded market, going up against larger contractors and territorial unions.
The work itself is never calm. Our customers almost always have an urgent deadline. When a plant goes down, it can lose hundreds of thousands of dollars a day, and they’re counting on me to get them back online and making money again. That means long days, emergency calls, and finding a solution when the customer doesn’t have one. Every one of those fights has made the company stronger.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
