Check Out Nequia Hill’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nequia Hill.

Nequia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was sixteen, I stayed with a job. If I could have another name, it would be Hustler. Nothing stopped me from chasing my bag. From the age of sixteen to twenty-one, I worked as a waitress, and from twenty-one to twenty-three I worked as a mail carrier. In the midst of all of that, I would do my dreadlocks or family members’ locs whenever I had free time. As you can see, when it comes down to work, I’m a hands-on type of lady. But oh, did I get a reality check to slow down a bit! In 2018 my son Jayceon was born. He’s brought on so many changes and challenges into my life, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. The moment he came into my life, I knew then I wanted more, not just for him but for my family and me. A few months after my son was born, a family member sent me a photo of handmade dreadlocks. She knew I had a passion for styling dreadlocks, and she would always periodically send me pictures and ideas. I believe that was her way of saying, “you have a gift, so use it!” without actually saying it. So, I’m thinking to myself, this photo can’t be real. I went straight to doing my research instantly. I was so interested that I left the house, went to one of the local beauty supply stores, and purchased all the tools I needed to make the dreadlock. Not kidding; I made the loc that night. Next thing you know, I’m meeting a customer at the gas station to sell my first order. Not only did I master that, but I taught myself how to install the dreadlocks on clients as well permanently. It’s 2021 now, and I don’t work for anyone. I’m Self-Employed. I currently sell and install my handmade locs to local customers and customers out of state. I’m amazed at how far I’ve become and excited to see what more I have in store.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge for me was walking away from my full-time job to focus on my business full-time. I was working 10-hour shifts and raising a child. I knew I wouldn’t have enough time for my business. Not mentally but physically. I took a leap of faith, continued to promote my business, and waited for my first customer. After that happened, well, everything else seemed to fall in place. I tell you about word of mouth.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a Loctician. I help clients start their loc journey and maintain healthy locs throughout the process. My biggest specialty is hand-making dreadlock extensions and installing them on clients’. Not everyone has the patience for what I do. What sets me apart from others is that my product is fast, neat, and efficient.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always was a people person, outgoing, reading books, and constantly challenged myself. Most of all, I loved having a good time with family and friends.
