Conversations with Ratissia Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ratissia Johnson.

Hi Ratissia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Dirty Blossom in 2013 I believe, I was living in Chicago going to school at Columbia for Fashion business and I was doing a lot of styling for friends and photo shoots, my best friend got me into thrifting, I started finding cool pieces and setting up photoshoots with friends or cool people I would meet and I decided to open an online shop. I was back and forth with the name but randomly Dirty Blossom popped in my head and it just stuck. I didn’t start floral design until about 2016, I was at work one day talking to a coworker and it was like I had an Epiphany, I said it would be cool if I did floral design as well it goes so well with my brand name so the next day I went to this grocer around the corner and started interning with the head florist and I’ve never looked back. It was the perfect combination for a lifestyle brand bringing floral design with vintage clothing together. I’m

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a rollercoaster for sure but I’ve had more highs than lows. I think the biggest challenge is being consistent, staying on top of posting on social media engaging with my audience. Social is great to a certain degree but it can also be overwhelming with comparison, sometimes feeling like you’re not doing enough. So, I give myself 3-4 posting a week so I’m not scrolling or going down a rabbit hole and I’m more inspired when I’m being present to what’s in front of me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in floral design and curated vintage clothing. I’m known for having beautiful arrangements at my pop-up events and the vintage pieces I sell are dainty and feminine with a dash of masculinity. I’m most proud of staying true to my brand, it’s so easy to fall into trends and lose your sense of self. I feel I’ve done a good job at being consistent of what Dirty Blossom stands for as a brand.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 Dirty Blossom will be a concept store, sticking to our roots with floral design and vintage clothing but we’ll be dabbling more into home goods as well as creating and building community with a monthly supper club.
