Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Scaduto.
Hi Carly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My photography journey began back in 2014 when I was pregnant with my son. I had this innate desire to learn to take nice, professional-looking photos of him as he grew and decided to buy my first fancy camera. From that point on, I embarked on an incredibly rewarding photography journey that has not only allowed me to take beautiful photos of the everyday moments with my own family but also share my love of photography with others.
My hobby turned into an official professional side gig when a company called Shoott hired me as one of their professional photographers for the St. Louis market in June of 2021. I got such a positive response from the work I did that I decided to establish my own photography business in August of 2021. Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and photographing others for their business marketing needs, social media, family photos, couples, seniors, lifestyle newborn photos, and so much more.
I am also passionate about teaching others who are new to photography because I have been in their shoes and know how overwhelming it can be to learn how to use a “fancy camera”. So whether you need to book a photo session with me or are looking for some beginning photography guidance, I’ve got you covered!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A few challenges come to mind when I think about how smoothly my photography journey has gone, At the beginning, I struggled with my confidence and really needed my clients’ feedback to help me feel validated about my work. The more photoshoots I did, the more confident I became and I no longer need validation from others to know I am delivering beautiful, memorable photos.
I also struggled with how to balance photography with my family (I have 2 young kids) as well as with my full-time job. I have my husband and our kids to thank for their patience and support as I use up precious weekend time doing what I love doing so much!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Though I’m also a mom and a full-time communications professional, I am a professional photographer on the weekends. I love photographing people and enjoy every minute of photographing families, seniors, couples, local business professionals, babies, and kids of all ages, as well as expecting moms.
In my free time, I also love to play around with other forms of photography (like macro photography and night photography) and love learning new things. I overshoot and deliver way too many photos to my clients after each session because I just can’t help myself! Having two kids of my own and always having my camera with me when I’m with them means I excel at working with families and their kids.
I put parents at ease when they worry about their child not cooperating because I have a great way of engaging even the most challenging kids! I also pride myself on how much photography guidance and advice I share with others. I just love sharing my true passion with others who want to learn.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Have patience, photography and shooting in manual, learning to edit and everything else that goes with that can take time to learn. But the best way to learn is to keep practicing. Find a Facebook group for the camera you own. Join your local photography Facebook group, find people to practice taking pictures of the outside of your own family. Join a photography meetup!
