Check Out Lou Bopp’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lou Bopp.

Hi Lou, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’m a self-taught photographer. I got my start in Berlin. I happened to be nearby when the Berlin wall came down and quickly hopped a train to witness history. I took a few photos and sold them and that’s when lightning struck.

Next, I came home to St. Louis and freelanced, and then after dozens of phone calls and letters, I landed the highly coveted internship at Sports Illustrated in NYC. From there, I shot whatever I could and assisted anyone that I could in NYC! 100% Hustle and I haven’t looked back.

Presently, I have residences in St. Louis and NYC and travel all over, primarily focusing on commercial, advertising, and brand library projects.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If it was smooth I wouldn’t be doing it. I like challenges. As a freelance commercial photographer, the challenge is always getting in the door. And staying there. I love to connect with people and bring their creative ideas to fruition.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an on-location photographer and director. My aesthetic approach is driven by real, textural, compelling moments, whether shooting stills or motion.

I specialize in creating and capturing genuine & authentic imagery depicting lifestyle, corporate, industrial, and pet brand imagery for agency and corporate clients. I have years of commercial experience including making large global image brand libraries, advertising campaigns, editorial and short-form motion assets for web & broadcast, as well as one full-length documentary.

A partial list of clients and project partners include eBay, Mississippi Tourism, Marley Coffee, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, AMD, Deutsche Bank, Intel, Nike, AMEX, American Airlines, GE, Disney World, Time Warner, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, J. Walter Thomas, People Magazine, AG Edwards, CDW, Y & R, Fleishman-Hillard, McCann-Erickson, FutureBrand, Deutsche LA and more.

I have had the unique privilege of having one of my images selected for a USPS First-Class Forever stamp and have 2 published books: Hidden History of Mississippi Blues (History Press) and Mississippi Juke Joint Confidential: House Parties, Hustlers & the Blues Life (Arcadia Publishing).

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Calm under pressure. Surround yourself with great people, whether assistants, reps, producers, digital techs, etc.
Connecting with people, whether clients or subjects, and creating a comfortable space for people in front of my lens.

Authenticity is key.
