Daily Inspiration: Meet Travis Haughton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Haughton.

Hi Travis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Travis Haughton, and I’m a film director and producer from St. Louis, Missouri, based in Atlanta, Georgia. I recently walked the stage at Webster University, receiving my degree in Film, Television, and Video Production, Scriptwriting, as well as a certificate in Entrepreneurship. Months after graduating college, I was blessed to work on 5 movies and counting, gaining more knowledge and experience to add to my resume. While in college, I’ve attended the American Black Film Festival multiple times to learn more information about the film industry coming directly from black perspectives. This year, I’m proud to announce that I am selected to be a volunteer for the 2022 American Black Film Festival! I’m so excited to meet more people in the industry and help behind the scenes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In life, I feel that you have to have downfalls to have an uprise. I have messed up so many times in life, but looking back, I have learned from all my mistakes. Every day I continue to educate myself mentally, physically, and emotionally. One year, I’m living my best life, and the following year I’m drowning in my regrets. I want to emphasize that I’m learning and growing every day and that no one is perfect, so keep going, keep doing you, and keep being great because that’s the only thing that matters – in my opinion.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Mental Health is so important, and I don’t think people realize it nor take the time to focus on it, especially in the black community. After being bullied for many years without seeking help, I almost did something that I would’ve regretted for the rest of my life, but thanks to the man above, I’m here today. If you have any questions about finding the right resources, please contact me at taughtbyt@gmail.com.

What sets me apart from other filmmakers? Nowadays, on television, you rarely see anything focusing on mental health in the black community. As I use my voice through film discussing mental health, hopefully, other people will speak up and do the same – as well as seek help from a professional.

Alright, before we go, can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
This year I am focusing on releasing all my college short films. There are a total of 4 short films, and one of the films, “Back to Black,” directed, written, and produced by me, will be released on May 31st, 2022.

2023: New stories, New films, watch out!
Cycles repeat in life, but how do we break them? Back to Black focuses on mental health from a black man’s perspective. In this film, Malcolm has a mental crisis in his personal life, which is also shown at work. This film stars Joel Antony, Dylan Redditt, Adam Flowers, and Leah Sutherlin – Filmed at Webster University in December of 2019.

I thank every person who helped make this project come to life. You all are loved, and I appreciate you all for taking time out of your day to contribute to ‘Back to Black.’
Please take this last day of Mental Health Awareness Month to watch ‘Back to Black’ and feel free to share your honest thoughts on the film in the comments!
