Today we’d like to introduce you to Saberra Massey-Hill.
Hi Saberra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first moved to St. Louis, Missouri, from Minnesota and 2016! New to the city, my sister told me that if I were interested in going to the phlebotomy school, she and her husband would pay for it. So took her up on her offer and got certified at the St. Louis School of phlebotomy. Since then, I’ve become a nationally certified CPT and a national certified CPI a certified phlebotomy instructor. I work for many places in St. Louis, Missouri, including VA hospitals and local physicians, but it wasn’t until COVID-19 happened. That had huge impact and made me and forced me to start my own business.
I started in late 2019 with the idea of having a mobile phlebotomy company due to my grandfather Mitchell Massey who had Dementia. And I saw how hard it was for my grandmother to take him out to his appointments, and I always wished that there was someone who could come to his home and service him. This also was the start of Covid-19. It changed the world due to this pandemic, and it also changed me to want to become an entrepreneur and no longer work for hospitals. They were definitely unappreciative of their healthcare staff due to the virus. I was five months pregnant with my second child when I started my business. I was determined not to be a statistic, work for the rest of my life, and barely have time for my children. I contacted a Mobile Phlebotomy mentor, who gave me information on how to start my own Mobile Phlebotomy business with minimal instructions on how to at the time; I started to do my research for the state of Missouri. Little by little, I worked in my business to everyone who listened, until I became a local name. With Massey Mobile Phlebotomy services, I want to be able to change the demographic of healthcare and also services everyone. No matter your race, health status, or age
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a crybaby by nature! I have shared so many tears along this world, but I can honestly say I have gained so much knowledge and some lifelong friends. Some of my struggles was getting my name out there to the people in St Louis! Some people don’t even know what a phlebotomist is,this was a real struggle trying to introduce something new to many people. I knew that I was certified to do my job, but I wanted others to know that the service was out there for them at their disposal. As we all know, Covid brought on obstacles and challenges by ensuring that my patients were properly protected from the virus.
