Today, we’d like to introduce you to the Talk Yo Shxt Show. They and their team share their story with us below:
During quarantine, one of Kobe Griffin And King Rue’s mutual friends, Canaan Brooks, told Kobe that he and King should start a podcast together since he thought they were both funny/entertaining. Before Kobe and King talked about beginning a podcast, the last time they spoke to each other was in 8th grade when they were on the same football team, North County Cowboys. Kobe proposed the idea to King, and King was all for it.
In making the first couple of episodes, Kobe and King were trying to think of a name for the podcast, and at first, it was “College Dropouts” since both of them had dropped out of college. Kobe attended the University of Central Missouri, and King attended Washburn University. Quickly, they changed the name as it was only one episode of “College Dropouts.” Talk Yo Shxt came from the idea that when people hear/view the show, it’ll come off as two guys speaking whatever came to their mind, not being filtered.
After 20 episodes of filming the “Talk Yo Shxt Show,” Kobe decided to go back to college to attend North Carolina A&T, which paused the show because Kobe and King weren’t in the same city. Around the second semester of the school year (spring 2021), Kobe started posting show clips on TikTok, which gained the show some traction. The YouTube channel went from 300+ subscribers to around a couple thousand in weeks.
Kobe decided that for the show to keep growing, he had to be in the same city as King, so he left North Carolina A&T that spring. The summer of 2021 is when the show got a lot of traction, with videos on TikTok hitting millions of views and fun guest appearances on the show. One guest or consistent person was Jonathan Watkins (JDub). He was another mutual friend of Kobe and King, who also played on that same 8th-grade team. JDub first asked to be behind the scenes and control the stuff like cameras, lights, social media, etc., but Kobe and King thought it would’d be a better idea to add him to the show because of the three guys’ chemistry off-camera. Once Jdub became a part of the show, he added another point of view to topics and brought his comedic flavor. The three guys are approaching their 100th episode towards the end of this year, which is a big accomplishment.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The road could have been smoother, but it was easy. Kobe started to get in his head because the views weren’t where he thought they’d be, and King kept the positive energy with his “patience is a virtue” saying. These are just everyday creator problems. The biggest problem we have encountered is being consistent and not taking so many breaks, but sometimes, we need more topics or things to discuss, so we don’t record. That’s why we have been brainstorming other things to keep people entertained besides the show. One of the other obstacles we faced early on was when Kobe went back to school, so they couldn’t record for months. Still, Kobe and King had a bunch of unreleased videos in the vault, so those got posted while Kobe was at school; plus, with the help of TikTok, being separate for a month didn’t hurt us too badly.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets us apart from others is we bring the viewers/listeners into our lives. Some people would think they know us simply because of our vulnerability on the show and the life stories we tell. We also try to interact with everybody who supports us because we wouldn’t be here without the support—also, the different dynamics of all 3 hosts. Kobe is the wildcard; you never know what he’ll say on any episode. King is the comedic relief with his reactions to specific stories and his own stories he tells, and JDub is the chill, laid-back host who has some of the most out-of-this-world theories you would never think of.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Press the record and stay consistent.
