Exploring Life & Business with Anna Palmer of House of Colour STL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Palmer.

Hi Anna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am Anna Palmer, the owner of House of Colour STL.  I was previously was a stay-at-home mom for 13 years. I had just given birth to my third child and was in a funk. A friend of mine told me about “getting your colors done” and suggested we do it. I was not interested at all! I ended up looking into it, and I soon became obsessed. I started searching for someone in the area who did the color analysis and realized there was a hole in the St. Louis area market. I decided to open a House of the Colour location before I even had my colors done. I could not quit thinking about bringing this business to my city. After having a color analysis and finding out, I was an Autumn. It changed my life (and I’m not a cheesy person-but. It did!) This service and style analysis gave me new confidence in myself without changing a thing about me. I slowly began to appreciate where I was now, not who I used to be. I had something positive to focus on, and people noticed a change in me.

Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a new business always has its challenges. I knew this would be a significant change in the dynamic of my family after being a stay-at-home parent for so long. I stayed up so many late nights to put in the hours and woke up before everyone else for months. It took a long time to feel like I was starting to get to a good place with the juggling act of life, work, family, and taking care of myself. It’s something I still struggle with as a mom and entrepreneur. (It is part of the gig- you care about your kids and your new baby-the business) As an entrepreneur, you are going to work more and harder than you have at anything in your life, but I enjoy all of it. The biggest challenge is accepting that everything will not be perfect in all areas of my life at the same time. I am getting more comfortable with that, and it has allowed me to let go of all the outrageous expectations I typically put on myself. It can be terrifying starting something new. Sometimes other people will not understand it at all. I took a risk and told myself why not me? I had to be confident and believe in myself and what I was doing- even when sometimes I questioned it myself. I invested a lot of money, time, and energy, and I am so thankful every day that the business is thriving and growing more every month!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
House of Colour STL offers many services, but our two main offerings are Color and Style Analysis. Through these services, we give the gift of confidence in showing up as your best and most authentic self. During color analysis we look at your skin’s undertones and give you a season or palette of colors that compliment your natural skin and beauty. Style analysis will consider your personality, body architecture, and lifestyle to give you direction on how to dress your body. It helps you to bring your true inner self and personality to the outside.  This isn’t about being stylish or trendy-though it can if you are into that, but more of how to be you no matter what the trends are.  You will be able to look for what works for you and leave the rest.

These two services together allow you to show up and dress authentically.

We also help with closet edits, makeup, and personal shopping. What I love the most about this business is that I get to show others how beautiful they are without changing a thing. Every person I see is unique, and it never gets old seeing someone gain confidence for themselves and get excited to show up in the world. Life is full of transitions, and sometimes we feel lost when going through one. I feel honored that I get to provide services to help men and women feel seen and feel like their true selves.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that has helped me succeed is being genuine with people and not quitting but pivoting. People want you to be yourself, flaws, and all.  I ask my clients to show up and be vulnerable for me and I try to give them the same. I have dabbled in many things over the years and discovered they weren’t for me. I knew there was something else, and I would figure it out if I tried enough and kept going. It led me to a career that fits me so well and that I look forward to every.single.day.  It brings many challenges but most everything can be figured out or fixed. I’m a blind optimist, but you have to keep going!
