Today we’d like to introduce you to Synthia Looper.
Hi Synthia; so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Synthia Looper was conceptualized out of a deep love of music, sci-fi, fantasy, makeup, graphic novels, cosplay, and social justice. I created her character as a means of coping with all of the turbulence in society, especially in the last few years, while providing myself with a healthy, creative outlet. However, despite all of the political and global chaos, I’m grateful for the recent pop-culture shift (brewing on high, especially over the last decade or so) popularizing what I lovingly refer to as nerddom (ex: Marvel / DC movies, special effects makeup, cosplay, graphic novels, etc.). The same elements that make nerdom alive and well today established the foundation of creativity my entire life, so it finally felt like the right time to showcase all of my nerdom while exploring so many other facets that weren’t as accessible in the past to create Synthia Looper. However, because I love dressing in various costumes, wigs, makeup, etc., I couldn’t settle on just one type of character, so I developed her into what I call a ‘Synthapien,’ a part human, alien and synthetic android capable of changing forms based on the current dimensions in which she resides. Her surname ‘Looper’ implies she loops through space and time. She generates otherworldly sounds, lyrics, and even visuals through song and art to regale listeners of her interdimensional travels. Despite her various forms, however, she remains a strong, bold artist whose compassion for humanity never sways, and she’s made it her mission to transport listeners to her worlds where delicate beauty and romance coexist with the dark, the light, and cybernetics.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Thankfully, developing my character and music came naturally because of my passion for art and music. However, as I’d mentioned earlier, these last two and half years of global/political turmoil prompted this project, which was challenging to cope with. I’m grateful I had a creative, mentally stimulating, and soothing outlet.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
I am a musician and performance artist from Flint, MI. I created this project to combine my love for sci-fi, makeup, cosplay, music, graphic novels, and more. My music is unique, as it is an unusual yet cohesive and beautiful blend of ethereal synthpop and indie/pop rock. I perform with a loop station, a vocal fx processor, a purple electric guitar, and backing tracks. Not only do I put a lot of time into the music itself, but also the aesthetic. As I’d previously mentioned, my character (Synthia) loops thru space and time. Therefore my aesthetic shifts accordingly. In some moments, I am an ethereal space princess; in others instances, an alien nymph woodland creature or even a cyberpunk heroine. The possibilities are endless. This unique combination sets me apart from most musicians, and I am very proud of this.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Creativity, hope, compassion, patience, and perseverance are integral to my success as a musician and a person. My goal is to live my best life, and to do that, I must maintain these qualities, as they will allow doors to open and growth to happen on many levels.
