Rising Stars: Meet Brittany Banks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Banks.

Brittany Banks

Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I had a passion for fashion but never thought of it as a career until I was college shopping in high school, and a friend said to me, “Why don’t you go to school for fashion?” So, I enrolled in Fontbonne University’s Fashion Merchandising program with a minor in Graphic Design and learned about all the different career paths I could pursue, from styling to buying. While I was in college, I started working at my first job in the mall, Charlotte Russe, and got a great discount, so I used to spend my whole check there. I enjoyed dressing up daily, taking pictures, and sharing them on social media; everyone always admired my style. Then, I thought I could do something with content creation, which I never thought of as a career, so I started my YouTube channel in 2018 and became more active on Instagram, showcasing my style, hair, and beauty tips to my small audience. My interest peaked in so many areas of fashion. I always knew I wanted to open a clothing store one day, so in 2019 I launched my online fashion boutique, BOSSEGO, where I could wear many hats as a boss, a stylist, a buyer, a merchandiser, a photographer, a graphic designer, a content creator, and the list goes on! I have gotten the opportunity to work with many brands in my niche, to continuing the growth of BOSSEGO and my social media presence, while being able to do everything I love.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth journey in that I thought not having a large following meant you couldn’t succeed or get brand deals. Believing that discouraged me from even starting YouTube and deterred me from posting on social media, making me feel like no one would shop at my store. I put all those thoughts behind and realized everyone has there own journey. If you don’t try, you won’t succeed; I just started consistently putting out content and promoting my brand, then I started getting emails and DMs left and right for collaborations and have shipped BOSSEGO orders worldwide! It is still a struggle because I admit I can procrastinate when I may not feel motivated, and when I am working on a project, I am my worst critic. This fast-paced industry can be exhausting to keep up with and adapt to changes while staying consistent with high-quality content. Still, every day I remind myself that if I stop, I am failing, not because I didn’t sell out a product or didn’t get a lot of likes/feedback on a post, but as long as I keep going, I am winning because you never know who is watching or who you could be influencing.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make content showcasing my fashion style while incorporating style, beauty tips, and hair tutorials. I love creating and hope to inspire others who enjoy my content and may want some advice. My brand, BOSSEGO, reflects my style, and it embodies confidence while being humble, a little sexy but modest, and high self-esteem but not conceited. It’s for the go-getters who aren’t afraid to flaunt the skin they’re in and want to be comfortable and best dressed at the same time. What sets me apart from everyone else is that I have a sense of style that people don’t see every day because I wear what I feel, not what I see. I follow my path and set trends, and when I do follow trends, I still have a way of making them look like my own. I am also very passionate about what I do and enjoy helping others tap into their inner fashionista, and that shows through my work, making me relatable.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The way you represent yourself is what you’ll attract, and if you don’t put yourself out there naturally, then you can’t expect anyone to find you. Through my journey, I have connected with like-minded individuals in my career path and maintained those relationships because having a friendly, positive attitude, showing enthusiasm and drive, and being yourself is important; that’ll also make you approachable. Pictures are one thing, but personality and first impressions, including personal interactions online, are everything, making you more interesting.
