Exploring Life & Business with Erica Steel of Queen Dinner Dash LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Steel.

Erica Steel

Hi Erica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Erica, the owner of Queen Dinner Dash. For as long as I can remember, cooking was a way to get out of my head. As a child, I was the one my granny always asked for help in the kitchen. She said I was a good listener. I learned so much from her and carried those life lessons in the food I prepared. She taught me that soul food was for the heart. She showed me how to add color and love to everything I created. She told me never to use a cookbook because those were someone else’s thoughts. Soul food, by definition, is a cuisine that nourishes not just the body but also the spirit of a person. In the creation of this restaurant and in the food we serve, we took the time to think about how food can give our bodies what we need and serve as a form of healing and comfort. You will see that my recipes are a beautiful blend of family traditions and outside influence. We twisted it up with cajun spices. We created unique flavors and sauces. We took things to another level.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has always been bumpy; I was a DCF Child. I was a teen who was in group homes and homeless most of my teen life. My father died in Evanston in 1988, a few months before I was born. My mother was on drugs and dealing with the loss of him and, later, her father and mother. She also was in and out of jail because she stole to keep her habit. She is 18 Years clean now.( I’m very proud of the woman she is today! I’m strong because of her! I wouldn’t change anything about my life I’m Queen! )

We’ve been impressed with Queen Dinner Dash LLC, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Queen Dinner Dash is a Catering business. We also plan events where we do an all-in-one event, which means food, decorations, providing DJ, Photo booth ECT. I just finished culinary school. However, up until this year, I was self-taught.

What does success mean to you?
In simple terms, success is accomplishing a goal. But the goals everyone establishes for themselves are highly personal — and there aren’t any wrong answers. You have unique experiences, values, and resources that shape your perspective and priorities, as does everyone else.
