Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Nolan.
Hi Brian, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. Before we ask about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was born, my father was a home brewer. We lived blocks away from a commercial brewery. In my teens, I lived in London for several months. I enjoyed English, Scottish, Irish, German, and Belgian beers. American mass-produced light lager would never suffice after that. I began home brewing in college as a hobby for decades afterward. In 2007, my corporate job was displaced by the faltering economy. I had to reinvent my life and livelihood. At the time, the growth of craft brewing was on the rise. With the support of many friends, hence the name of the brewery, I embarked (formed LLC in 2010, bought building in 2013) on creating a gathering place in my hometown where I could combine several of my passions: renovating historic architecture, collecting historic beer advertising, and brewing craft beer in many styles.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Small business of any kind is challenging. The brewing business is difficult. You have to love it to do it; the ratio of hours/rewards can be less than ideal. Then came the staffing difficulties, the saturation of the brewing industry, and now a terrible economy with inflated costs of doing business. But we love what we do and power through each day; our customers inspire us always to forge ahead.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We have been in business for nearly eight years and have grown yearly. Our original brewery in Wentzville now encompasses an entire city block, with an expansive dog-friendly beer garden, covered outdoor seating, music, and a seasonal outdoor bar. Our food partner, the Caboose Kitchen, has grown with us. We host parties and fundraisers and take pride in creating new friendships. Our brand, Friendship, has lived up to its name and inspiration, and we take great pride in it and what it means. We have now expanded to three locations. Flint Hill, MO, has ample production space (with distilling). Taproom, food, outdoor space. Also Hannibal, MO. Large historic building on the Mississippi River on historic Main Street, great beer, and great BBQ!
