Conversations with Anthony Winfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Winfield.

Anthony Winfield

Hi Anthony, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had an eye for art ever since I can remember. I come from a family of artists, whether artists, music, drawing, painting, etc. So I guess it’s fair to say that besides the gifts and talents GOD gave me, I inherited them from my parents, who were both very good at art.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life for me has been a challenging road. However, it hasn’t been all bumpy either. Very few people I’ve come across say that life has been a smooth road, so this is what shapes us into being who we are, good, bad, or indifferent. Everything is purposed whether we understand it or not. Life’s speed bumps and potholes teach us which roads to take and which to avoid.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a self-taught freelance photographer. I specialize in Nature Photography. I’m known for capturing beautiful lighting in my images. I am most proud of how I started Winfield Photography. I bought an entry-level point-and-shoot Canon camera 18 years ago and began taking pictures of anything that caught my eye. After shooting with the camera for a few months, I realized shooting nature shots seemed more interesting and exciting. I loved shooting nature shots, but I noticed a problem with the pictures I was taking. None of the images I took looked like my “eye” naturally saw any of them. After bumping my head through trial and error, I began buying books on photography, and that’s when the light turned on. I went from shooting in automatic mode to shooting in manual mode. That took me to the next level of photography. Now, things were starting to change for the better. I was learning to adjust my settings, such as ISO, shutter speeds, and aperture. I was learning how to manipulate the camera to produce images just as my eyes saw them, which catapulted my skills to an even higher level. By trade, I am a Licensed Barber, so from time to time, I would show some of the images I had taken to my clients and some of the operators in the barbershop. Before I knew it, there was a buzz at the shop and now around town that Winfield Photography had become known for producing outstanding images. As time passed, I was hired to do various photography jobs such as family photo shoots, weddings, maternity shoots, headshots, family reunions, social events, etc. One of my proudest moments was recently being contacted by and connected with Curators from Nine dot Arts out of Denver, Colorado. This led me to great opportunities, such as displaying my work at the law firm of Husch Blackwell’s beautiful new headquarters in downtown Clayton, Missouri. What sets me apart from others in photography, other than absolutely loving the craft is understanding the importance of how light works. Lighting is crucial to a good shot and great photography.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, we’ve all been affected or know someone affected by Covid-19. Life is truly a gift, and it is very precious. The lessons learned from COVID-19 are to not take life for granted and to live and let live. One of the beautiful things about Winfield Photography is that it is the gift that keeps giving. Photography is the gift that gives us wonderful memories of friends and family and moments of good times in our lives.
