Today we’d like to introduce you to Darlene Richard.
Hi Darlene, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My long-term aspiration has always been to pursue a career as a public speaker. However, I lacked a clear understanding of the necessary steps to achieve this goal. During my time in college, I sought to gain practical experience by volunteering and interning with the American Red Cross. In this capacity, I assumed the role of an instructor, facilitating educational sessions. Additionally, I had the privilege of teaching a series of business continuity classes in collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).
After college and raising my kids, I decided to make a big change and pursue a career in speaking. Even though I had little experience, I was determined to make it happen. I started looking for work, and I eventually found a gig as a host for music bingo. It wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but it was a start.
I realized that I enjoyed working with people, and that’s when I decided to go all in on my speaking career. I got a website, started networking with people, and even gave myself a pseudo-name, Nelda Tone. I later traveled the US and worked for a dance competition company, which was a short-lived but valuable experience.
I continued to expand my speaking skills and joined several organizations that would help me on my journey.
The defining moment that boosted my confidence was taking an improv class. In Dallas, at a comedy club called Four Day Weekend, they offered a free session similar to the TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” On my initial day, I had the opportunity to participate in a showcase as someone had dropped out. Through six weeks and countless hours of training, I learned both long and short-form improv. The showcase was a success, igniting my desire to learn and do more.
While working as a music bingo host and learning improv, I also collaborated with the Downtown Garland Business Association and hosted open mic events at their outdoor venue.
Pursuing my passion, I enrolled in a storytelling class. It was then that I discovered my true calling. Eager to delve deeper into the art of storytelling, I joined the National Storytelling Association. Attending conferences and festivals became a regular part of my journey, and soon enough, I found myself speaking at several storytelling events across Dallas.
Storytelling holds a special place in my heart because it allows me to share my journey and showcase how I have overcome life’s challenges. By narrating my story, I have observed that it often prompts others to share their own experiences. These stories are diverse—some heartwarming, some heartbreaking, others intriguing, humorous, and thrilling. I have extended invitations to share their stories, but many individuals hesitate due to stage fright. To address this, I aspire to create a platform where people can comfortably take the stage and share their stories through video.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has not been easy. One of the first hurdles I faced was figuring out where I fit in. With my love for public speaking, event hosting, and setting ambitious goals, narrowing down to just one niche felt like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Despite countless suggestions to focus on a single area, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t the right path for me.
So, I made a choice. Instead of conforming to expectations, I embraced my versatility. I decided to continue pursuing my varied interests with gusto. Public speaking, storytelling, and co-hosting events became not just hobbies but a reflection of the colorful tapestry of skills and passions I bring to the table.
There have been doubts and moments of uncertainty. But looking back, I realize that staying true to myself was the best decision I could have made. I’ve discovered the beauty in embracing all facets of who I am rather than trying to force myself into a predefined box.
As a new speaker, I’ve found joy in sharing my message of inspiration and connecting with audiences, both paid and unpaid. While charging a fee for my engagements helps support my speaking business, I recognize the importance of gaining valuable experience and expanding my reach.
Storytelling has become a powerful tool in my presentations, adding depth and resonance to my message of inspiration and assistance. Each opportunity to speak, whether compensated or not, brings me closer to my goal of making a positive impact on others.
Despite my passion for speaking, I’m mindful of the need for financial stability. Bills must be paid, and investments in my business are necessary for growth and success. Balancing these responsibilities with my speaking career has been a rewarding challenge.
Having experienced struggles while pregnant, I have a profound empathy for those facing life struggles. This personal experience drives me to seek employment at homeless shelters like Our Daily Bread in Denton, Texas.
I have the privilege of offering support and assistance to individuals in need. The flexibility of my schedule allows me to pursue my speaking career while still making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Each day, I’m grateful for the opportunity to use my voice to inspire and uplift, both on stage and in the community. My dual roles as a speaker and a shelter worker fulfill me and remind me that true success is measured not only by financial gain but also by the positive impact we make on the people around us.
Every challenge I’ve faced has only made me stronger and more resilient. And as I continue on this journey, I carry with me the confidence that comes from knowing I’m charting my course. My versatility isn’t a limitation—it’s my greatest strength.
Let me share a lighthearted tale about how I found the perfect name for my brand—it’s quite the journey! When it came to naming my brand, I wanted something distinct but also practical. Using my real name posed some legal concerns, so I turned to a name generator for inspiration. Imagine my surprise when the name “Nelda” popped up among the suggestions—it was unique and had a certain charm to it.
Curiosity piqued, I decided to do a quick Google search. To my delight, while there were a few individuals named Nelda out there, none had paired it with “Toñe.” It was like stumbling upon a hidden gem! Without hesitation, I seized the opportunity and built my brand around this newfound name. Setting up a website, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages, I embarked on this exciting new chapter.
Sure, there were a few raised eyebrows and teasing remarks from some, but I chose to brush them off. Because you know what? When you search for “Nelda Toñe” online now, guess whose smiling face pops up first? Mine! Embracing the uniqueness of my brand name has been a joyful reminder that sometimes, the most unconventional paths lead to the most rewarding destinations.
Navigating the world of speaking engagements as a newcomer comes with its share of challenges. It’s no secret that event organizers often lean towards big names to attract crowds, and the idea of paying for a lesser-known speaker might give them pause. But here’s the thing: every successful speaker started somewhere.
I’ve learned that overcoming these hurdles is all about resilience and strategy. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come knocking, I’ve taken the reins and actively reached out to event organizers, conference planners, and corporate HR departments. With each pitch, I highlight not just my experience but the unique value I bring to the table.
Sure, it’s not always smooth sailing. Convincing organizers to take a chance on me requires creativity and persistence. But with each rejection comes a lesson, a chance to fine-tune my approach and build stronger connections within the industry.
Networking has become my secret weapon. By fostering genuine relationships and seeking out opportunities for collaboration, I’ve been able to expand my reach and secure speaking engagements that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks.
Every event I speak at, no matter how big or small, is a chance to showcase my passion and expertise. And with each audience I connect with, I’m one step closer to building a name for myself in this competitive landscape. So yes, the journey may be challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable. With determination and a strategic mindset, I know I’ll continue to rise above the obstacles and make my mark as a speaker worth listening to.
Stepping into the world of social media after a six-year hiatus was a leap of faith for me. Despite my aspirations to become a public speaker, I had shied away from these platforms due to a fear of invading my privacy. But as I embarked on this journey, I realized that being a speaker and staying off social media simply couldn’t coexist.
So, I decided to face my fears head-on. I dove into learning about TikTok, Instagram, and brushed up on Facebook and LinkedIn. It wasn’t easy at first, but with each post and interaction, I found myself gaining confidence and discovering the power of these platforms to connect with others.
Sure, the pressure to post frequently can be daunting, but I’ve made a commitment to authenticity. I refuse to take shortcuts by buying followers; instead, I’m dedicated to growing my audience organically, one genuine connection at a time.
While social media has its perks in reaching a wider audience, I’ve found solace in my website. It’s a space where I have full control over the content I share, allowing me to provide deeper insights into who I am and what I stand for.
I’ve come to realize that social media isn’t just about self-promotion; it’s about building meaningful connections and sharing my message with the world. And as I continue to navigate this digital landscape, I’m excited to see where this newfound openness and authenticity will take me on my path as a public speaker.
Finding reliable videographers for my events has been quite the journey. It’s not always easy to secure someone who can capture the essence of my presentations promptly. There have been instances where promised recordings took weeks to materialize, leaving me without immediate access to visual documentation—a frustrating hurdle indeed.
In moments when I couldn’t rely on external help, I’ve had to get creative. Setting up my own tripod and hitting record became second nature, even if it meant juggling multiple tasks simultaneously. And while hiring a professional videographer is undoubtedly valuable, the hefty price tag isn’t always within reach.
Despite these challenges, I’ve learned to adapt and make the most of what I have. Limited recordings or none at all haven’t deterred me from sharing the magic of my events. Instead, they’ve pushed me to find innovative ways to document and showcase my work.
Every obstacle I’ve encountered has only strengthened my resolve to persevere. And through it all, I’ve come to appreciate the journey—the ups, the downs, and everything in between. Because, in the end, it’s not just about the recordings; it’s about the impact I make and the lives I touch with my message. And as I continue to navigate this ever-changing landscape, I’m filled with optimism and excitement for the adventures that lie ahead.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an emcee, storyteller, and speaker, I’ve been advised by several speaking organizations to focus on a single niche. However, I discovered that delving deeper into my knowledge and expertise was necessary to get paid as a speaker. Despite having a wealth of knowledge on goal setting, I struggled to secure paid speaking engagements.
To gain more stage experience, I embraced the opportunity to become a traveling emcee. While this provided me with the opportunity to emcee events across the United States, it still fell short of my desired stage time. Subsequently, I enrolled in improv classes, which reignited my passion for improvisation.
From there, I embarked on a storytelling journey, regularly performing at storytelling events throughout Dallas. Additionally, I expanded my repertoire to include music bingo, karaoke, and open mics at various venues in Dallas.
Although dedicated to various pursuits, I acknowledge the need for a steady income. To address this, I have taken on a permanent job. Some of my speaking events are unpaid, as I’m still striving to establish myself as a sought-after speaker.
I host and emcee various events, including music bingo, karaoke, and open mic nights. My open mic stands out because I offer a diverse lineup featuring musicians, poets, storytellers, and anyone who has the desire to perform on my stage. However, I conduct screening before allowing participants to take the stage.
My primary goal is to foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcomed and supported. I believe in the potential of every individual to shine, as reflected in my motto: “Everyone is a star on my stage.” By providing a platform for self-expression, I aim to create a space free from judgment and stereotyping.
Whether it’s their debut performance or their seasoned professionals, I strive to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and confident. Hosting open mic shows not only allows me to meet new people but also contributes to a sense of community and connection.
Through my personal storytelling and speaking engagements, I aim to inspire others. My stories are deeply rooted in my own life experiences, such as raising two children as a single mother. They encompass not only the trials and tribulations I’ve encountered but also the abundant joys that grace my life. By sharing these personal narratives, I hope to empower others to embrace their own journeys, overcome challenges, and discover pathways to success.
Throughout my life’s journey, I’ve encountered numerous challenges and triumphs. I am particularly proud of my resilience and ability to overcome adversity. Sharing my stories and experiences with others has been a significant source of pride for me.
I am grateful for the opportunity to raise children and to witness their growth and development. Their love and respect, and my respect for them, fill me with immense joy. These experiences have played a pivotal role in shaping the skills and qualities that I possess today.
My passion sets me apart from the rest. I’ve embraced it and embarked on a journey that is not without its challenges, but my passion is my driving force. Mistakes are not something I fear; they are opportunities to learn and grow. I set strict deadlines for myself and hold myself accountable for achieving my goals. If I don’t reach a milestone, I analyze my approach, rectify errors, and if necessary, chart a new course. My passion fuels my determination to persevere and ultimately reach my intended destination.
What matters most to you? Why?
Prioritizing my own happiness has become a central focus of my life. As a single parent, I previously neglected my mental and physical well-being while raising my children. Over time, I have come to understand that my happiness may differ from others, which is perfectly acceptable. Finding joy in activities like road trips, meditation, and saying no has reduced my stress levels significantly. Embracing activities that bring me joy and pursuing my passions has improved my overall well-being. I have learned to prioritize self-care while recognizing the value of others in my life.
