Rising Stars: Meet Alejandro Garcia Lemos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Garcia Lemos.

Alejandro Garcia Lemos

Hi Alejandro, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
First, let me thank you for this. It is an excellent opportunity for me. I started living in the city of Bogotá Colombia, where I went to the school of Fine Arts.
My interest in traveling and the arts started at an early age and soon I became a member of the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota. As soon as I got my bachelors degree, I decided to try New York City, but I couldn’t make it. I was pretty much poor and the times were hard, so I had to go back to Colombia. Back in my home country I worked as a Creative Director for a couple of Design agencies and later worked for British Petroleum Company, which allowed me to start seriously combining traveling and work. Finally, in 1997 I decided to go for my Master’s Degree in Miami. This journey took me to live in several cities in the East Coast of the US. Today, I spend my time between New Orleans and Columbia, SC.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting my immigration documents as a gay man was particularly difficult before legislation was passed to protect the legal rights of the GLBTQ+ communities in the US. It took me almost 10 years to become a US citizen.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have had a practice as a visual artist for about 30 years, but I feel that something that I am proud of is that I have been able to combine my passion for the arts with my work as a partner of small language agency that we started 22 years ago.The agency (comunicar) specializes in legal and medical Spanish and English interpreting. Also, as part of my practice, I am regularly drawing while I am traveling, to the point that I recently has a solo show at the Columbia, SC main library that focused only on my travelogue.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Definitely my business partner and beloved husband of 25 years: Britt Hunt. He has been the main engine behind our company and he is always happy and willing to follow my passion for the arts.
