Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Wells
Hi Shannon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey in esthetics started before I even knew it was a profession. As a teenager, I loved creating face masks and cleansers from ingredients in my kitchen to improve my skin and combat breakouts. Although these methods never worked, this personal obsession with skincare laid the foundation for my future career.
In Feb 2019, while searching for a place to get a facial, I stumbled upon the field of esthetics. Up until then, I was only familiar with dermatology. That night of scrolling the web searching for someone to provide a facial service, was the same night I realized I could go to school to become exactly what I was searching for, an esthetician. Unlike my previous attempts at traditional college, which never felt right, this path promised a fulfilling and purposeful career. So that night, I booked a facial and began researching esthetics schools nearby.
In November 2019, I enrolled at Crave Beauty Academy. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, I graduated as Valedictorian in July 2020 and quickly passed my state board exams. By October 25, 2020, Your Skin Friend (YSF) was born, and on November 1st, I welcomed my first client at the Lash and Spa Suite in Florissant, Missouri. YSF was established and flourished even amidst the pandemic, and it continues to grow nearly four years later. I have recently relocated to the Central West End, right on Euclid Avenue, with the goal of expanding our reach and welcoming a more diverse clientele.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Since launching YSF, I have encountered numerous challenges. Entrepreneurship is demanding, but navigating a business through the COVID-19 pandemic and then immediately facing the pressures of inflation presented a unique set of hurdles. Without clients, there is no YSF, and I have had to learn to navigate several “off” seasons. My first experience with this was particularly challenging—as it seemed to happen overnight. As a result of inflation, bookings sharply decreased, and my phone, once busy with new appointments, was now flooded with notifications of cancellations.
Adding to this, as a beauty professional, I face the ever-present challenge of competing with influencer-driven trends and DIY culture. These trends often promote quick fixes that can undermine the value of professional care. Navigating this landscape requires a delicate balance of staying true to my expertise while adapting to an ever-changing market.
Despite all these challenges, YSF is still here, and I truly believe that it’s by God’s grace. It’s His hand that has guided me through every obstacle, provided for my needs, and kept this business alive. Each day is a testament to His faithfulness, and I am deeply grateful for the growth YSF has experienced. I am reminded constantly that this journey is not just about business—it’s about purpose, trust, and being a vessel for something greater.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a solo esthetician, my business focuses on the overall health of my clients’ skin by creating customized treatments that target the individuals’ needs, all while maintaining the integrity of the clients’ skin. This holistic approach, inspired by Korean beauty practices, enables me to “Correct without Compromise” by emphasizing prevention as a foundational step.
It’s a common misconception that resolving skin issues requires the strongest products or a noticeable tingling sensation to indicate effectiveness. Unfortunately, this misconception often leads to the misuse of products and a compromised skin barrier. At YSF, I focus on helping clients create balance in their skincare routine, emphasizing long-term health and resilience over quick fixes. My goal is to educate clients on how to care for their skin in a way that supports its natural processes.
While I welcome all clients at YSF, I have a particular passion for working with those who are acne-prone and struggle with scarring and hyperpigmentation. As an acne specialist, I understand the physical and emotional toll these issues can take. I’m committed to providing personalized treatments and expert guidance to help clients achieve clear, healthy skin. Witnessing the transformation in a client’s complexion—and the renewed confidence that comes with it—is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. At YSF, it’s not just about treating the skin; it’s about empowering clients with the knowledge and care they need to feel their best.
In addition to my role as an acne specialist, YSF offers a specialized service for the removal of dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN) and seborrheic keratosis (SK), often referred to as “moles.” These raised skin lesions are particularly common among individuals with darker skin tones. As one of the few solo estheticians in the STL area with specialized training in this procedure, I am uniquely qualified to deliver this service. This specialized expertise sets YSF apart by offering a diverse range of services tailored to meet each client’s unique needs.
At YSF, I view my work as more than just a business—it’s a ministry to which I am deeply committed. When clients book with YSF, they are choosing more than a facial; they are entering a space where every interaction is personal and meaningful. With nearly four years of experience as an esthetician, I have provided not only facial treatments but also emotional support. I have been a friend in times of need, a voice of reason, a source of comfort, a shoulder to lean on, and a prayer partner. My clients find at YSF a place of calm and renewal, where they receive care that restores both their external appearance and their inner well-being.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Spending quality time with my family brings me the most joy. It’s easy to get caught up in the “hustle” culture and prioritize hard work over everything else, often pushing family time down the list of priorities. However, as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand that our time together is truly precious. I now make it a priority to schedule time specifically for my family—whether it’s watching a movie, sharing a meal, going on outings, or attending church together. These moments with loved ones are incredibly important to me and are what make me truly happy.
