Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Moeslein.
Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in New Orleans, I was surrounded by fantastic food and culture. I grew up spending the holidays at my great grandma’s house, followed by my grandma, where they would create tantalizing Cajun meals. Six weeks before Hurricane Katrina, my family moved away from New Orleans to Saint Louis. However, we held on to our southern roots and continued to create our traditional Cajun meals.
I went off to Baylor University for college, where I honed in on my love for marketing and creativity. After that, I knew I wanted to find a creative outlet outside of my 9 to 5.
After moving back to Saint Louis, I spent several years working my way up in the marketing industry. Whenever I brought my lunch to work, someone commented on how great it looked or smelled, and my mom experienced similar responses. We both value health and wellness and always strive to fuel our bodies with wholesome food.
My mom and I sat down one day and realized we needed to share our recipes. What better place than on a food blog? With my background in marketing and her 40 years in Louisiana, we knew we could be the perfect mother-daughter duo.
We spent time setting up the website during the pandemic, buying a new camera, learning food photography, and working on new and fun recipes with a healthier twist. Several months later, The Southern Spoonful was released.
We now run the blog as our creative outlet, sharing family Cajun recipes and healthier recipes that we know and love.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As the saying goes, anything worthwhile takes time. We have our family recipes, but there was a learning curve on how to photograph the food to appeal to our followers. In addition, it has taken a tremendous amount of dedication and time to work a 9 to 5 and run the blog, but we are passionate about making it work!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Southern Spoonful specializes in using simplistic all-natural ingredients to help the everyday home cook elevate their everyday. What sets us apart is that these recipes are tried and true and use wholesome ingredients. While they do not follow any specific diet, they are recipes that we create and eat each day.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is key! We joined a food photography community that has been immensely helpful in troubleshooting and navigating life as a new blogger. In addition, we network with other food bloggers. It is beneficial to have a support group to bounce ideas and work together to improve our skills. In addition, it’s a great feeling to have a community that values building each other up over competition. My most significant piece of advice – don’t be afraid to fail. Put yourself out there, reach out, and make the connections. Not everyone will respond, but it only takes that one person to help your career take off.
