Check Out Joey Goldsmith’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Goldsmith

Hi Joey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into video production started over 18 years ago, almost by accident. At the time, I was working for a company specializing in inspection, design, and fabrication when they asked if I’d be interested in capturing video for their projects. Armed with a small Canon digital camera, I started filming inspectors examining welds on massive industrial tanks—hardly the storytelling I had envisioned, but it was my first step into the world of video.

From there, I transitioned into creating over 500 product videos for an online cable store, refining my skills in scripting, shooting, and editing. That experience led me to a social media management company, where I produced educational content for professional and NCAA athletes—helping them navigate the evolving world of digital branding.

But alongside my full-time work, I was also building something of my own. For over 17 years, I worked as a freelance video creator, taking on projects that allowed me to explore different styles and creative challenges. I had the opportunity to work on music videos, indie films, and even create a viral social media video, Shit Hipsters Say, which took off online and proved the power of digital content.

My freelance journey also led me to unexpected places, like working with a company that manufactured helical piers—also known as “earth screws”—which help stabilize foundations for homes and businesses. While it wasn’t the most glamorous subject, it reinforced how video could simplify complex ideas and engage an audience.

And that path eventually brought me to where I am today—creating video content for radio station programming. Working in this space allows me to blend creativity with entertainment, capturing moments that resonate with audiences in a way that’s both engaging and authentic.

Looking back, my career has taken unexpected turns, but each step has shaped the storyteller I am today. From industrial inspections to indie films, from viral videos to radio programming, I’ve had the chance to create across so many different spaces.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. My journey with video has had its fair share of bumps. One of the biggest challenges was realizing that I’m more of a creative than a businessperson—a tough lesson that came with its own growing pains.

I’ve dealt with people trying to get more than what was agreed upon, clients who didn’t have the budget but promised “exposure” (or as I like to call it, exposure bucks), and situations where I poured everything into a project only to be ghosted once I was no longer useful to someone. It’s frustrating when people see you as a transaction rather than a collaborator, and early on, that kind of treatment made it easy to feel jaded.

But looking back, I’m glad I went through those experiences. They taught me how to set boundaries, recognize red flags, and approach projects with a clearer understanding of my worth. Every tough lesson along the way has prepared me for the opportunities that came later, and I wouldn’t trade that knowledge for anything

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a video content creator at Hubbard Broadcasting, where I create content for radio stations like 105.7 The Point, 106.5 The Arch, KSHE 95, 101 ESPN, and 92.3 WIL. Over the past seven years, I’ve worked on everything from sales-driven content—like HVAC company videos and doctor interviews—to pure entertainment—like filming punishments, behind-the-scenes content, and video series for radio talent across all our stations.

My specialty is After Effects. I’m known for taking a video that might have been just okay and turning it into something completely unexpected—using effects, visual gags, and editing tricks to elevate it in ways people don’t see coming. A big influence for me was Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! on Adult Swim—their chaotic, surreal editing style inspired me to push boundaries and experiment with what video can be.

The projects I’m most proud of are the ones that make people laugh. If I can create something that helps someone escape the noise of life for a moment and just enjoy a ridiculous video, then I know I’ve done my job.

What sets me apart is my willingness to go weird. I’m not afraid to experiment, break the rules of traditional video production, and try something completely offbeat. Whether it’s adding bizarre effects, unexpected edits, or just fully embracing the absurd, I love pushing ideas to places most wouldn’t think to take them.
