Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexie Johnson
Hi Lexie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been a musician/performer for as long as I can remember. My family has many videos of me as a little girl giving musical performances while dancing around my boombox. As I was growing up, music was a huge part of my life. While none of my family members are very musical people, they noticed my talent and decided to help me grow in it. I started taking voice lessons and piano lessons around the age of 6. As I grew as a musician, people always told me that I should study music in college. For a long time, I thought I didn’t want to actually study music. For one, I didn’t actually know how to read music and for two, I didn’t want to lose my love for music by making it my job. However, as my senior year came to a close, I decided to pursue becoming a music educator. Within my second semester of my freshman year, I was asked to join as a teacher for the Wayne State College Music Academy. I had my first student ever! I first taught ukulele and then began to teach voice and guitar soon after. Though I stepped away from music education and pursued my BA in vocal performance, I loved teaching music privately. As I grew as a private music teacher, I decided to start teaching for an online music company. As I expanded my online client base, the company announced its closure. I took the students I had gained from that company and started my own music company, Lexie’s Lessons. I moved to STL in May to pursue my graduate career as a music therapist and brought my business to STL and its surrounding areas. Now, here I am!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it has been a pretty smooth road. However, I’d say the biggest difficulty has been following my dreams because in order to do so I had to pack my bags and leave my family and husband to move 8 hours away from Nebraska to STL.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a small private music company owner. I teach anything from voice, ukulele, and guitar to trombone and euphonium. I made it a goal in my undergraduate studies to learn and play almost every instrument I possibly could. I can now play 15 different instruments. I love teaching privately and am currently taking more students if anyone is interested in honing a new skill! I teach online and in person! I’m most proud of my hardworking students who make their dreams come true. I think what sets me apart from other music teachers are 3 things. 1. I adapt my lessons to my students goals. No two students of mine have the same lessons. 2. I am affordable 3. I have extensive training in voice, how the voice works, and audition preparation. I am an actor here in STL myself so I know how auditions work around here!
