Today we’d like to introduce you to TASOM Youth Club.
Hi TASOM Youth Club, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Our club was started in 2016 with 5 members, our current mentor being one. They set the layout for the club, its rules, amendments, office positions and we are continuing what they started. We learned from their experiences and improved upon them. The first year they were only able to hold one fundraiser event, now, despite COVID, we were able to host two fundraiser events (currently working on the third) and have held interfaith dinners, volunteered at food banks, park cleaning, and made donations to several charities/organizations.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Our road has been considerably smooth except for a few challenges. Finding sponsors for our non-profit organizations and finding ways to reach out to communities in need have been obstacles along our way that we have overcome. Also, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit we had trouble meeting up and helping communities that had been hit the hardest by this virus.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are the Turkish American Society of Missouri Youth Club. Our goal is to connect young people and inspire them to serve their communities and reach out to other youth groups and try to spread our cultures/religions and share with each other. We hold community service, team bonding, and fundraiser events. The money from the fundraiser events gets donated to communities of our choosing. We have held many events including intercultural activities, park clean-ups, many different forms of fundraisers, volleyball tournaments, henna nights, game nights, and trivia nights.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
We’ve learned many things about the cultures of people from different countries, religions, and backgrounds. We have learned the problems people and communities go through and found ways a group can work together and solve these problems.
