Today we’d like to introduce you to David German
Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The Mission:
Our mission is to change the environment in which children of low-income single parents grow up. We can best do this by helping parents level up vocationally through education, allowing them to gain employment with traditional hours to increase involvement in their children’s academic and social lives and eliminate the stress of financial woes.
The History:
Having taught in low-income communities for 22 years, I have seen how difficult it is for a single parent without any post-secondary education to find a job that enables them to be around at night and on weekends for their children. It often is not a lack of wanting to but instead of knowing how to level up. This is where Romans 1210 comes in.
The Vision:
Single parents who go through our program will gain new vocational skills leading to a job with better hours and pay. Our goal is to educate and guide them with compassion and knowledge in order to create a better home life for their children. This will enable families to break the cycle of poverty and improve the community as a whole.
Having been a teacher for 35 years, a lot of it in low-income communities, I wanted to make a difference. I decided the best way to truly make a long-term difference was to get to the root of the problem. This means changing the environment that kids are growing up in. If we could help single parents get a job that enables them to be home at night to read to the kids and check on their homework, as well as relieving some of the financial stress each month, this greatly improves the child’s chance of being successful in life.
A lot of people in this position want to level up but not having a background in education, they don’t know how. Picking a career tract, filling out scholarship papers, and getting enrolled seems overwhelming so they just stay where they are.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have struggled to get help with our program. I have had people help when they are between jobs and that has been very useful but it’s usually only for a month or two. Being a new nonprofit, we do not have a big following yet and I feel like we are hitting up the same people all the time. I would love to have someone (or someones) that come along side of me to help us grow. We have some donors but none of them are consistent with their donations. Because we do not constantly give things out (clothes, food, toys) we are not constantly on “out there” to be on peoples mind. We help them pick a career path, get enrolled, take a few growth classes, then graduate and get a new job. This is a lengthy process and not something we can consistently post about.
We’ve been impressed with Romans 1210, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

We are not a temporary solution, we are breaking the cycle of poverty. We want to equip people so that they don’t have to utilize charities for the rest of their lives.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Growth will not be as fast as you want it to be. Networking is very important. Try things, don’t wait around until conditions are perfect, go for it.
