Community Highlights: Meet Libby Ryan of Midstory Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Ryan.

Hi Libby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My journey to becoming a counselor has been a unique and rewarding experience. While I loved being a stay-at-home mom, I always knew I would return to counseling when right. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Counseling 6 years ago, I decided to take a break from counseling to focus on raising my children.

This year, I finally felt ready to start my private practice. I was nervous about returning to the field after being away for so long. Still, I knew that my life experiences as a mother and someone who has navigated through their struggles with anxiety and complex family relationships would give me a unique perspective as a counselor.

Now, as the owner of my private practice, I can work with adults struggling with anxiety, life transitions, and other challenges. I take a holistic approach to counseling, incorporating mindfulness practices and other complementary therapies to help my clients achieve balance and healing. I am particularly passionate about working with adult children of emotionally immature parents, as this group of individuals often struggle to find the support and validation they need.

Overall, my journey to becoming a counselor and starting my private practice has been challenging at times, but it has also been gratifying. I am grateful to be able to use my life experiences and training to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was so unsure about pursuing counseling as a career after so many years away from it. I felt the imposter syndrome profoundly and wasn’t sure what moves I should make. Luckily, some incredible people encouraged me to pursue my career and jump in. I’m so glad I did because it feels like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

We’ve been impressed with Midstory Counseling, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart?
I specialize in anxiety, life transitions, and adult children of emotionally immature parents. I especially enjoy working with highly motivated individuals looking for healing and peace. I take a holistic approach to therapy by integrating CBT and mindfulness practices. Strengthening the mind-body connection can significantly impact the therapeutic process. Midstory is the term used for the middle layer of plants in a forest ecosystem. A tree that isn’t fully grown but is past its seedling stage. Just like the midstory of a forest, we’re complex and in between places in life. We can look back at where we’ve been, where we are now, and what is yet to come. We can heal past hurts, be present in the now, and work towards a brighter future.

What do you think about luck?
I’ve gotten lucky with the connections I’ve made with others to get me to where I am. These connections are necessary to know where I’d be. I am incredibly thankful and lucky to be surrounded by mentors encouraging me.
