Conversations with Alexis Evans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Evans.

Hi Alexis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I believe that your birthday should be treated like your very own national holiday. Everyone deserves to feel special and every day that we have the privilege of waking up is a day worth celebrating! I have always been a very creative person, even as a kid. Art has always been my sweet escape. My mother and I would always do projects together, and I used to help her put on events for her church. I actually hated whenever she would put me to work, but the end result was always very beautiful.

When I was younger, I always thought that I wanted to do fashion design. I would always sneak and draw in class whenever I was supposed to be doing my work, and I would daydream about coordinating fashion shows and throwing extravagant after-parties. When I reached high school, I opted to take graphic design classes… because they don’t teach fashion design in Waynesville, Missouri. I really loved it and I continued to study it in college. Unfortunately, growing up in a small military town, there were not many options for any kinds of jobs in a creative field.

For a long time, I worked a lot of odd jobs that I was not always very happy doing. I even considered going back to school at one point to study dental hygiene just in order to have a stable job. But dental hygiene is not art. I’ve always loved the idea of having big, lavish events and I really love the fun themes! I always attempted to throw really cool parties, and when I became a mom, I finally had an excuse to.

While working all of those odd jobs, I literally prayed to God and said, “PLEASE point me in the right direction and help me to find the right career path!” I prayed that it would be something in a creative field that I knew I could be passionate about and I promised that no matter how hard it would be to pursue it, I would see it through no matter what. Then, one day I had an epiphany! With the design eye I had developed from drawing fashion sketches, the creative skills I gained from studying graphic design, and all of the behind-the-scenes tasks that my mom forced me to do setting up at the church, it finally hit me… I should do event design!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road, especially with Covid hitting after my first year in business. I also didn’t realize how difficult it could be doing events as a single mother. It’s just me and my son here in St. Louis. Growing up, my parents were in the military, so my closest family lives two hours away. I also noticed that a lot of up-and-comers, like myself, either didn’t have kids or they were older. Initially, I was kind of envious because my schedule was not always as open and available as their’s and I thought that I would fail because of it. It wasn’t until I started having conversations with those same people that I realized I had a great advantage. Because I have a young child, I am always in the know of what the kids like, and my parties have been very successful because of it. Even though quarantine, my son and I would do styled shoots at our home to keep from being bored in the house all day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do event styling and balloon design. I get lots of balloon jobs consistently, but my specialty is children’s parties. I also do other types of events like baby showers, adult birthday parties, and bridal showers, but that is what I’m best known for. When parents come to Party With Lex, they want the cool themes, cute little children’s table setups, themed desserts with the matching food tents, and, of course, over-the-top balloons. My goal is to make people’s Pinterest boards become a reality for them. I also do work for a lot of local businesses here in St. Louis. I have done balloon installs for CLR-MNSTR, Burger 809 and Strange Donuts, just to name a few. They mostly hire me for grand openings, anniversaries, and other special events.

I think what sets me apart from others is my extreme attention to detail. I do a lot of research behind the scenes to make sure that I understand my assignment. Whether it is a local business that I am doing a balloon install for or a theme-specific event, I look at it all as a brand. It is very important to me to understand that brand and what it represents when I am in the design process. I want every last detail to represent whatever that might be. For example, when I did one of my balloon installs for Burger 809, I remembered that the owner liked roses. So, I surprised her and added fresh florals into her balloon garland. Another example is when I threw my son a safari themed birthday party, all of the guests were shocked to see that their green napkins were embossed with scales. I think that is what I’m most proud of because I’ve learned that those little small things do matter to people. They really pay attention to that stuff.

What matters most to you? Why?
The thing that matters most to me is consistency. I really work to gain my client’s trust and to keep it. It’s important to give them that wow factor when they see the finished product, but it is even more important to me to show up and deliver. I promise these people a hassle-free party planning experience, and I want them to have that. The worst part about throwing your own party is not getting to enjoy it. I like doing all of the behind-the-scenes stuff, and I like making people happy, so I want them to walk away from their event knowing that it was money well spent.
