Today we’d like to introduce you to Annamaria Lu & Christeena Curtner.
Hi Annamaria & Christeena, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
We were drinking at a bar watching the Blues play while talking about the upcoming St. Louis CITY SC season. We convinced ourselves that the next logical step in our lives was to create a soccer podcast with the perspective of being new fans. We partnered with the St. Louligans to bring the plan to fruition. We have just under 10 episodes released and have enjoyed every second of the process!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest thing for us has been being careful not to stand in our way. We had an advantage because there is a network of podcasts through the St. Louligans that we could get plugged into, but as first-time podcasters and as newer fans, we needed to figure out what the audience reception would be.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
WannabeFans is a soccer podcast in St. Louis hosted by Annamaria Lu and Christeena Curtner. We come to the sport as new fans who bring a lot of enthusiasm but may need to gain the technical knowledge that longtime fans have. However, our perspective is unique because we allow for the opportunity for others who may not be familiar with the sport to become fans alongside us. We serve to create an inclusive and welcoming environment through our podcast, where any level of soccer fandom is appreciated.
What characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to if you had to?
For us, being authentic and being ourselves have been the most important. We don’t pretend or posture to be people we aren’t or that we have knowledge that we lack. We’re willing to learn from our mistakes, take feedback, and apologize when we get things wrong. Most important to us is having fun with the whole process: from creating podcast ideas to recording the content to editing the audio.
