Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlene Mcdaniel.
Hi Charlene, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always loved incense and candles! I started wanting to make candles but wanted to provide more than just a candle. I wanted to make something that represented me and my spiritual journey then. I decided to make candles with a focus on meditation. Like most people, I had difficulty focusing during meditation or didn’t know what I should be doing during that time. With this in mind, I designed each candle to represent your focus during meditation. The candles also come with an attached informational card explaining the candle’s focus and the crystal inside.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started the journey of candle-making in 2018. I was getting acclimated to doing pop-ups, I had my first opportunity to be in local stores, and my business was slowly growing—then COVID hit. Not only did the world shut down, but I also lost my full-time job. I panicked at first, but then I learned to pivot. I temporarily started making masks and hand sanitizer. I saw and fulfilled a need, which helped people discover me and the other products I had to offer.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on? What are you most proud of?
Metaphysics is an old practice that many people are now just discovering. As someone raised in Christianity meditation, energy work is frowned upon, so I wasn’t sure how people would embrace it or even understand it. It was difficult at first until I found my niche; I discovered that there were people like me trying to figure out how to meditate who were also on a spiritual journey of enlightenment. This encouraged me to tap into who I am spiritually and make more tools to help people along the way to theirs. I am proud I found something I love, and others love it too.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Find a way to stand out! There are several different types of candles you can make. I am still discovering ways to improve my products and make different candles to add to my inventory. Don’t just stick with one product! My customers got me into incense making because they always asked for them, and I noticed that only a few people were making incense. When the pandemic hit, the candle-making business became oversaturated. I was glad I had unique candles and other products to stand out from other
candle makers.
