Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Drexler.
Hi Heidi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Photography has always been an interest of mine. It wasn’t until 14 years ago that it became a passion, obsession, and career. I documented my life well, I was the girl that always had a camera with her, collecting a large collection of photo albums that travel with me through life.
After a fun six-year career with Enterprise Rent-a-car after college, I became a mother and the rest is history. My Grandmother bought me a digital camera as a gift- I would stay up until 1 am studying lighting, aperture, and teaching myself how to use a camera. My babies were my subjects. Fast forward 14 years, I have clients all over the country, shoot for a lot of businesses and brands, and am proud to have earned the St. Louis Magazines A-List award for best photographer in 2021! I am a Lifestyle Brand photographer working with many businesses and brands of all backgrounds.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a creative, traditional school was very difficult for me. Growing up in the 80’s there was not a lot known about learning disabilities. My struggle is memory and reading retention. I grew up thinking I was less than my pears because of how hard school was for me. I think that is also a reason I was drawn to photography. I learn and live by visible cues. Anytime I hear about a child that is struggling in school, it hits a nerve. I love how education is progressing and understanding all the different ways to teach children.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a lifestyle brand photographer, in other words, I help businesses and brands create content to tell their brands story through imagery. I photograph people the way I would want to be photographed, as simple as that sounds. I want to be authentic, natural, happy, and relatable. I do believe photography is my god-given gift and I am incredibly grateful for it.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I studied communications in college and never took a photography class. I was 30 years old when I learned how to use a camera. It is never too late to learn your passion, find your “thing”, or start something new.
