Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Lee.
Hi Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the metro-east and loved music from the start. I participated in band, choir, as well as regional and all-state orchestra. When I was in high school, I heard jazz for the first time and my musical trajectory changed.
I attended Webster and majored in jazz studies/vocal performance, then left for graduate school at New York University and have been a working musician in New York City since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My struggles have been no different than many women in the music industry, As a vocalist, composer and bandleader, I have experienced my share of sexism and have had to fight to be heard and taken seriously.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a modern jazz vocalist and composer. I focus on and am known for improvising beautiful sounds and changing the way the voice is heard and used in modern jazz music.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories were always travel-related. One of my favorites was in Montreal. We were staying at the same hotel as the Canadian Prime Minister and there was a red carpet and I thought it was so cool that we got to walk on it and be, somehow, part of Canadian royalty.
