Conversations with Minh Do

Today we’d like to introduce you to Minh Do

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my photography journey by exploring the city of Saint Louis with a couple of friends, taking photos on my phone just for fun. Along the way, other photographers reached out to me, and I began building connections in the photography community. I started posting my work on social media, and soon enough, friends began recognizing my photos.

Eventually, a couple asked me to take their engagement photos. Even though I didn’t have a professional camera at the time, I borrowed one from a friend and gave it a try. It was my first time using a camera, and I didn’t charge them for the session, it was more of a learning experience, and I felt honored to capture such a special moment for them.

Soon after, I planned a trip back to Vietnam, which motivated me to invest in my first camera, a Sony A7rii paired with a 55mm f1.8 Zeiss lens. With this full-frame camera in hand, I was ready to dive deeper into photography. I spent much time learning from YouTube tutorials and eventually became comfortable using the camera.

As I gained more experience, I started photographing weddings, family sessions, and senior portraits. Five years later, I’m a seasonal photographer and videographer, balancing my love for visual creation with my full-time work as a nail technician.

Throughout my photography journey, I’ve been lucky to visit some amazing places, including France, Switzerland, Iceland, and Italy. In the U.S., my favorite place to shoot is California, the weather and endless scenic views make it a photographer’s dream.

As I’m settling down now, I’ve been focusing more on local projects, but my passion for photography remains just as strong as when I started.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I worked on growing my skills, there were times when I felt stuck or stagnant. To push through those moments, I decided to sign up and work for a few out-of-state studios. This allowed me to meet more experienced photographers and videographers, allowing me to expand my knowledge and gain fresh perspectives.

I never saw struggles as obstacles; instead, I viewed them as challenges to overcome. Every difficulty became an opportunity to find a solution and improve my craft.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a seasonal photographer and videographer, specializing in weddings. With experience in American, Indian, and Vietnamese weddings, I confidently tailor my approach to each couple’s unique style and vision. Working with out-of-state studios has helped me continually expand my skills and learn from seasoned professionals.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, the COVID-19 crisis taught me the importance of having backup plans. It provided a break that helped me reflect on my work and realize how crucial it is to adapt to unexpected situations. This experience has made me more resilient and flexible in my approach to both photography and life.
