Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Thompson.
Hi Samantha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I originally went to school for pre-med. After working a few years as mental health specialist at DePaul Hospital, I decided I wanted to work in an industry that aimed to help people that wanted it and were ready for change.
I started working at Supplement Superstores in St. Peters which launched the change in my career. From there, I went on to independently train clients out of a small studio before purchasing a gym in Fenton.
After some happenings that were outside of my control, I stepped out of the business and launched my own, Worth The Weight, and trained my clients one-on-one out of a private studio in St. Charles. That same year, I came down with a rare condition causing total renal failure that almost ended my life that put me in the hospital for 40+ days. Although I made it through, my studio did not.
So now, I am currently running my business out of House of Pain in Maryland Heights. I work to educate my clients on the integration of mental health and fitness, and how important one can play into the other while helping them create sustainable, long-term, life-changing results.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has been anything but smooth.
From stepping into bad business at the beginning of my fitness career to launching my own business in the middle of a pandemic, then getting diagnosed with a rare condition that put me in the hospital for almost 50 days straight causing me to lose everything tangible that I worked so hard for.
It has been extremely challenging but very worth it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a primarily trained mental health specialist, I educate my clientele on the importance and integration of mental health and physical activity.
I am known around my city and surrounding areas for just that; teaching my clients coping skills, and nutrition skills, on top of learning how to work out for their specific goals.
I run my own business, Worth The Weight, where I train in person and online to help clients from all around achieve the utmost sustainable physical and mental wellness.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My childhood was pretty rough growing up. I grew up in a single-parent “household” – as it was barely that at times. My mother is chronically ill and has been fighting a rare form of brain cancer since I was two years old.
There were times, multiple times, when we didn’t have food or a “house” – we stayed in commercial buildings and even in storage units at times. I don’t resent these times as I believe they played a huge role in my resiliency.
I suppose my favorite childhood memories were the few times when my mom’s health was going uphill, and she was more active in my day-to-day life.
