Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Rue
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sarah Rue Photography came into existence sixteen years ago after a wonderful teacher & mentor in high school had fostered a love of photography in me as a distraction from a difficult homelife.
What began as a freelance journey into portraits, wedding & event photography, has evolved into a full blown career in leadership in the field, a secondary career in leadership & photography in the music industry, and a small business that has kept me afloat in hard times.
At eighteen years old the idea of growing up to have a life with stable income and healthy opportunities entirely sourced from the art, music & production industries was absurd to anyone and at times event myself.
However, with years of discipline, stubborn dedication & grit I’m fortunate to say I’ve have the privilege of existing in a life where I love and am deeply passionate about everything I do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, thankfully, it’s been a bumpy, difficult, scary ride.
I grew up in a home filled with violence, into a world lacking in understanding of neurodivergent individuals like myself and I was ambitious to grow up and become a decent leader from a young age in a workforce that wasn’t accepting of women & queer individuals.
My energy has been met with rejection for much of my life and it’s only fortified me into being sturdier.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Throughout the years I’ve become known in certain areas of the industry for my event, concert & wedding photography, and in others known for my various portrait series and my volunteer work throughout marginalized communities.
Currently, I’m very proud of on my new portrait series currently in production; On Deck; An SRP Tarot Journey. This series takes fans on a journey through my interpretation of the Major & Minor Arcana from the Tarot using models & locations from around half a dozen states in the Midwest.
Flexibility. I’m a problem solver, a fire fighter, a do-er. There’s not much that scares me these days and most problems we face whether in the field or in the editing bay only have so many solutions, so there’s never really a reason to freak out.
What makes you happy?
Functionally speaking- lifting heavy things.
Figuratively speaking- lifting heavy things.
It’s not just where dopamine can be found, it’s where the rumbling current of my consciousness can be calmed, and it’s where answers to how I should grow as an artist, leader & human can be learned.
I’ve been through a lot with my body in the last few years and I’ve lost my parents. I have arrived at a place of deep gratitude for having air in my lungs, movement in my body and the ability to keep working on my soul because aging in a gift not everyone gets.
