Daily Inspiration: Meet Chris Arnold

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Arnold.

Hi Chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My artistic story began in St. Louis; I grew up in the Western Suburbs, where I was raised. Attending Parkway West (I had to answer the obligatory High School question) gave me a solid foundation to explore and nurture my artistic talents. This passion led me to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree at The University of Missouri (Mizzou), followed by a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree at The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where I further refined my studio practice and developed my unique artistic voice.

Throughout my career spanning over 25 years, I have had the privilege of living in various places, immersing myself in different cultures, and experiencing a diverse range of creative influences. That said, no matter where my artistic endeavors took me, my heart has always longed to return to my hometown.

Now, after finding success as an internationally recognized artist, illustrator, and tenured professor, the opportunity to showcase my artwork back home fills me with immense joy and gratitude. The journey back to where it all began feels like a homecoming—a moment to reconnect with my roots and share the culmination of years of artistic exploration with the community that helped shape me.

I eagerly look forward to seeing my artwork displayed in my hometown. It’s a chance to celebrate the growth and evolution of my artistic practice and inspire and engage with the local creative community. There’s something extraordinary about exhibiting in the place where my journey began, and I am excited to create a meaningful connection between my artwork and the people who watched me grow. A limited collection of my original work is on view with the Houska Gallery in the Central West End (4728 McPherson Ave).

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a smooth road. Like most artists, my career has had its ups and downs, but it has been pretty easy overall. Throughout my journey, I’ve come to a simple realization: “I love making art.” Success is about finding contentment and joy in creating rather than solely focusing on financial achievements. However, I’m grateful for any economic success that comes my way. One key factor that has made this possible is my mom’s unwavering support. She has been there for me every step of the way, acting as my biggest champion. The hardest challenge I faced was the sudden loss of my father in 2015. He was always there with words of wisdom, whether things were going well or I was facing difficulties. Today, my art represents a combination of all the highs and lows while serving as a testament and tribute to my family.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an artist, I intend to capture natural moments that reflect a variety of conceptual considerations. I achieve this by combining various styles and sequences, aiming to initiate a dialogue with diverse audiences through the brush of environmental expressionism. My artwork is often characterized by its bold, colorful, and larger-than-life presence. Inspired by the layout techniques of comic book inkers, my linework serves as a driving force. At the same time, using nature’s beauty creates a sense of familiarity and invites viewers into the composition.

Upon closer inspection of my illustrative work, viewers will discover many visible and hidden techniques that deepen the narrative and storytelling within each piece. These “Easter Eggs” are words, symbols, codes, ciphers, and clues, waiting to be uncovered. My aim is not to confuse the viewer but rather to intrigue them with ideas that may not be apparent at first glance. Most of my creative output today is commissioned for galleries, publishers, agencies, murals, individual clients, and private collections. I consistently employ traditional materials, which are prominent in my art. I combine these materials with diverse processes, techniques, concepts, and philosophies. I continue to grow as a relevant professional visual communicator and educator through these endeavors, aligned with my personal history and values.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
When asked about my favorite childhood memory, choosing just one from the countless treasured moments is challenging. However, as this interview focuses on creativity, I’d like to share a memory from my artistic journey. In third grade, our class had the privilege of a visit from local artist John Pils. I can still recall the excitement as he showcased his artwork and encouraged us all to unleash our creativity. I remember him singling me out, acknowledging my talent, and presenting me with a button featuring the iconic Eads Bridge in St. Louis. While the fate of that button remains a mystery, the impact of that encounter is forever etched in my mind. Meeting a skilled artist at such a young age ignited a belief that pursuing a career as an artist was not only possible but worth pursuing. That memorable moment continues to inspire me on my creative journey.
