Hi Demetria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
The company’s name is the maiden name that I got from my father, who recently passed away in April 2020. Keep this in mind. Christmas of 2021 was when I decided to make a handmade gift for everyone in my family, and as I was looking up kits on Amazon, I saw candle kits. So, I had my husband buy one, and I bought a few more tins as I knew the amount that came in the kit would not be enough. I also bought extra supplies to be on the safe side. So, hours went by as I started making the candles and became impressed at how they turned out. That’s when the bright idea of me selling candles turned into having a business. I wanted to have a business name that would be catchy and keep my father’s legacy alive, which is how Just Wright LLC was created.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I have faced some struggles not researching the ins and outs of having a candle business, the cost, and what it truly takes to hustle and grind 24/7, along with the sacrifices I would have to make. I started thinking that everything from Amazon was good and of decent quality until I became frustrated that my candles were not doing what they were supposed to do. It wasn’t giving what it was supposed to provide. MY candles were not handled. I was not smelling the scents I bought from an oil store, the wax was not a good quality wax, and I became frustrated. Then having to have money to pay for a company to do the paperwork for me so I would be a legit business was stressful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us more about your work?
I make candles, wax melts, bath bombs for adults and kids, hand and exfoliating body scrubs, shower steamers, room sprays that can also be used as body sprays, body oil, bath bomb powder, and have more in store! At first, I was known for candles and wax melts, but at this moment, I am known for my body oil and shower steamers. I am most proud of my products because I never thought that I would have my very own business. All of my products are beneficial to the skin, and I am proud that people, including family and friends, have been repeating customers. Now it’s time to get my business and name out there for the world to experience my products! What sets me apart from others is God. I believe He was the one who gave me the nudge to create this business, and ever since I gave my business to Him, he has led me in the direction that I need to go. Also, most of my products are natural and are beneficial to the skin, as previously stated. The candles are 100% soy-based candles which have a clean burn and no soot, and the exfoliating scrubs are made with natural ingredients with a skin safe fragrance oil (not natural); the bath bombs would be the only thing that is not natural but has ingredients that do not break out the body and is skin sensitive-safe. My body oil minus the skin-safe fragrance oil is natural as well.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I looked to YouTube as a resource, and I asked my mother and cousin, who have successful businesses, for help, but mainly God and myself. I network when I vendor at pop-up shops throughout St. Louis. I consider myself a mentor because I have a friend who wanted to get her business started, and I took her under my wing, and now she is running her business independently. So, prayer and faith worked for me, and I do not mind helping others.
