Daily Inspiration: Meet Ginka Mateva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginka Mateva

Hi Ginka, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is one of courage, determination, and creativity. Born in Bulgaria, I embraced a life-changing opportunity in 2011 when I won a green card and moved to the United States with my husband and our 10 months old baby. It was a bold step into the unknown—starting from scratch with no money and no English, but with an unwavering hope for a brighter future.

In 2013, my journey took a creative turn when I received my first professional camera as a birthday gift. What began as a hobby—capturing precious moments of my little boy—soon evolved into photographing friends and their children. Each shot honed my skills and deepened my passion for photography.

Year after year, my talent and business grew, transforming into a successful career. Families, couples, and clients entrusted me to capture their most cherished memories. By 2024, I had photographed over 45 weddings in a single year—a testament to my hard work, artistry, and dedication.

My story is not just about mastering photography; it’s about resilience, starting anew, and turning a passion into a thriving business while balancing family and a love for the art of storytelling through the lens.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey is marked by resilience in the face of countless struggles, each one shaping the person and professional I’ve become.

When I first arrived in the United States in 2011, the challenges seemed immense, everything was unfamiliar. Simple tasks, like grocery shopping or communicating with neighbors, became daunting hurdles. The weight of starting over in a new country meant sacrifices, sleepless nights, and relentless determination to build a foundation from scratch.

In 2013, when I picked up my first professional camera, it was a leap of faith. Learning the technical aspects of photography was an uphill battle, as tutorials and manuals were often in English, requiring me to teach myself both the craft and the language simultaneously.

Early on, finding clients was tough. Many questioned my skills, and I likely had to offer discounted or free sessions just to build a portfolio. Balancing my growing passion with raising my children and managing the demands of family life added another layer of complexity. Financial struggles persisted, as every piece of equipment—a better lens, a new camera—was an investment that required saving and sacrifice.

As I started to shoot weddings, the stakes grew higher. Weddings are fast-paced, emotionally charged, and require precision. There were moments of self-doubt, fear of missing a critical shot, and the pressure to exceed expectations. At times, the work-life balance felt impossible, with late-night editing sessions and weekends spent away from my family.

Despite the obstacles, I refused to give up. Every struggle taught me something new—about perseverance, resourcefulness, and the power of believing in myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a family and wedding photographer and a lifestyle videographer, a beautiful blend of artistry, storytelling, and technical expertise.
I take pride in creating not just images, but legacies. My clients trust me with their most cherished moments, and I deliver art that transcends mere photographs or videos. Each frame is crafted with care, telling a story that resonates deeply with those who view it. My greatest pride comes from knowing that the memories I capture become a family’s treasures, pieces of history passed down for generations. I see my work as more than a career—it’s my way of celebrating love, life, and the beauty of human connection.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My work as a photographer and videographer brings me happiness because it allows me to tell stories, preserve memories, and connect with people in an intimate way. Seeing the smiles, tears, and gratitude from my clients reminds me that my work matters—it becomes a legacy for families and couples.

Spending time with my husband, two kids, and even my two cats fills my heart. Watching my kids grow, sharing in their milestones, and creating memories together is a source of immense joy. My family is my anchor and my biggest inspiration, reminding me of the love and connection that drives my work.

Hiking, traveling, and immersing myself in the beauty of the world around me make me feel alive. Being in nature or exploring new places sparks my sense of freedom and wonder.

I find happiness in drawing, reading, and other creative pursuits because they feed my soul. These moments allow me to dream, reflect, and express myself in ways that are uniquely my own.

These joys align with my core values: love, connection, creativity, and freedom. They remind me of the beauty in everyday life and give me a sense of purpose. My happiness stems from the gratitude I feel for the journey I’ve had, the people I’ve touched, and the memories I continue to create—for myself and others.
