Daily Inspiration: Meet Heather Garrigus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Garrigus.

Hi Heather, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
When I faced unemployment, I began searching for a job permitting me to employ my degree in Criminal Justice. Fortunately, I found a new job that gave me more free time, so I decided to try my first yoga class in person. I only attended a few classes here and there, but it soon became an everyday habit. Motivated to explore my passion for yoga further, I enrolled in a Yoga Teacher Training program. It proved to be one of my life’s most challenging yet fruitful experiences. Afterward, I taught at my home studio for an extended period until I decided to open Heather’s Zen Den Yoga Studio in February 2021. In memory of my late brother, I decided to open a business despite the pandemic. I knew it would be a challenge, but I wanted to honor him by living life to the fullest. I told myself that I would take on something new and daring every year, and this seemed like the perfect way to start. Though I was scared, I knew I had to take the risk to honor his memory. The journey with Heather’s Zen Den has been a wild ride of highs and lows. We thank the community for their consistent love and backing these past years. This venture has blossomed immensely, and we are humbled and delighted with the prospects it has presented us.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Figuring out how to be a successful small business owner was a challenge I faced. Fortunately, I had friends who gave me invaluable assistance with many tasks. This involved setting prices, decorating the space, marketing, creating a website, and setting up a point-of-sale system. Navigating the studio schedule was another challenging task. I wanted to know where to begin or which classes to offer. It was a process of trial and error for the initial months to determine which times and classes appealed to the students. I’m thankful to have amazing yoga instructors who make the process smoother.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a yoga instructor, I have a special fondness for teaching beginners. Watching the progress and transformation of my students in just a few months is truly incredible. Each class I teach, be it a warm flow, morning flow, or a rise & stretch class, has unique challenges and rewards that I love. We create a friendly atmosphere at Heather’s Zen Den Yoga Studio for beginners and experienced yogis alike. All the necessary items for embarking on your yoga journey are provided; all you have to do is show up!

What’s next?
This venture has blossomed into more than we ever could have imagined. We have many new and exciting plans for the new year. The studio is hosting a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training beginning in February and a Kundalini Yoga Retreat weekend in April. We are honored to invite Dan and Sue Retuta of Kundalini of Crestone to Colorado. We also look forward to working with the Riverbend Growth Association to expand our networking opportunities and learn all we can about being a successful business owner in the community.
