Today we’d like to introduce you to Justice Hobson.
Hi Justice, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I began lashing as a side hustle in 2018 while studying at Illinois State University. My interest in lash extensions later grew into a passion for beauty enhancement. As I learned more about the beauty industry, I fell in love with the art of permanent makeup (PMU) and knew that I wanted to take it on as a new form of art.
I completed two microblading and micro-shading courses during the summer of 2020. With the desire to provide the best service to my clients, I began to search for a PMU studio in my area. That search led me to Smith + Co Studios of Peoria, IL where I completed a PMU apprenticeship to gain additional professional and in-depth knowledge regarding permanent makeup.
To further my education in PMU, I am currently completing a tattoo apprenticeship at Aesthetic Finesse in St. Charles, MO to receive my tattoo license.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I can say that in the beginning things were going smoothly and that had a lot to do with how easy things came to me when I started doing lashes. I made a return on my investment, a month into working and I had clients coming in quickly to get their lashes done so when I made the decision to commit to permanent makeup, I thought things would continue to flow just as smoothly. A major struggle that I think almost all PMU artists can agree on is how expensive PMU is, as well as how slow the beginning can be. It takes a while for you to make back the money you invested in your course and equipment.
Unfortunately, I did not consider how hard it would be to transition from lash extensions to PMU. It was difficult trying to gain a prospective client’s trust to agree to a facial tattoo. I’m glad that I chose to work with the ladies at Smith + Co while I was in Peoria because they supported my transition into the PMU world and really helped me gain clientele while also teaching me new techniques. I felt great when I finished my apprenticeship and thought things would be just as amazing when I moved to St. Louis but it turned out to be even more challenging.
This time around I had to start from scratch, in a larger city, where no one knows who I am. Building clientele has been the most challenging part so far but it has also been the most rewarding. I have met so many genuine people through casual conversations that led to me educating them about what I do, what PMU is, and the different types of services they can receive.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Permanent Makeup artist (PMU Artist) also known as a cosmetic tattoo artist. I currently specialize in PMU brows but I will expand in services as I continue to learn more from my current apprenticeship. I am known for microblading, powder brows, and hybrid brows.
I am most proud of my ability to adapt to change and try new things. When I was in college I never thought that following graduation I would start a career in the beauty industry. I saw something that I believed I could be good at and gave it a shot and I am still being optimistic while pursuing my tattoo license. One thing about the beauty industry is that it is constantly changing, so it’s necessary for me to be willing to try something new. I’m proud that I don’t struggle with change.
What sets me apart from others is my determination, perseverance, and self-discipline. I know that in order for me to become the very best version of myself there are things that I can’t afford to do. The goal is to live like no one else now, so I can live like no one else later. This means I have to manage my time differently than my peers, my priorities look different than most people my age and I am okay with that. If I can’t be responsible enough with myself to stay disciplined, tell myself no, or stay focused on my goals then I’m not ready to become the successful woman that I plan to be.
Don’t get me wrong, I still have fun and make time for myself to do things that make me happy but those moments are set with intention. I have experienced more hardships in life than expected but I’ve learned so much from them and it all helped mold my resilience and grit.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The characteristic that I feel is most important to my success is self-confidence. It is so important to be self-confident in this industry because I am providing a serious service that requires my client to feel relaxed while I am working.
I love when clients lay back and say “I trust you, you are the expert” as if they aren’t getting a face tattoo! I don’t think they would feel that comfortable if I didn’t exude self-confidence through my work and personality.
