Daily Inspiration: Meet Troy Green

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Green.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story starts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I was born there and spent most of my childhood in foster care. Although I have early memories of my mother, her circumstances were very poor. I was one of seven children with no father figure. I was in between my mother’s care and a foster home until ten years old. At that age, I was adopted into a stable family.

They took me in and my two older brothers. The change was extremely challenging. My new parents kept me in church and in school. I discovered I was intellectually gifted and artistically talented. I went to a high school for gifted and talented students. That’s where I first started to explore music-making. It was only a hobby at first. I freestyled with friends and made instrumentals for fun. I didn’t foresee a career in music.

So I decided to go to college for French and International Business. But I still kept my hobby. I got better production software and equipment. In my second year of college, I studied abroad in Paris for two semesters. While I was there, I made my first mixtape. When I came back home to the United States, I started to push my music more. I gathered a decent fan base and started performing. In 2016 I got married and welcomed my first son into the world.

This same year our family experienced a flood that devastated our home. After the flood, we decided to move away. We came to Saint Louis and started from scratch. I hustled to get new equipment and built an underground studio. I decided to start my own label (Green Room Productions.) I started recording and making beats for cash. I reinvested that money into new a/v equipment and started shooting music videos.

Now my company has fully functioning label capabilities including music distribution. The artists under my label are me (Troy Green) and my brother (Mike G.) I’m glad to have found a way to make a career in music. March 28th, I will be releasing my fourth studio album “Love to see it.” It has a feature with my brother on it and another lifelong friend (D.Chris).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The main challenges that I face have been related to self-doubt.

I’ve made so many songs that I never released because I didn’t think people would feel them. I feel my best songs come from the most vulnerable places. People respect when you put your heart on the line. It is such a difficult thing to do though. I also try to keep my friends and family in mind.

I only want to promote positive energy for them to listen to. Needless to say, I don’t feel positive every day.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love the fact that I have remained independent. I have full control over what music I release. I am a Jack of all trades who does more than just rap. I produce and engineer my own tracks when I want to.

I don’t make beats as much now because I work with great producers. DJ Hii- Tekk will be the sole producer on this next album. I’ve networked with a lot of people and now have listeners all across the world. What’s probably most important to me, is the fact that I don’t make disparaging content.

I promote positivity and inclusion. Sometimes my music is delivered through satire, but my audience is intelligent and understands my message. I’ve overcome such difficult circumstances; I’m proud to be where I am now.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
For anyone seeking a career in music, I suggest learning everything you can learn about the industry.

If you have a certain skill set, you can never go broke. Trust and believe in yourself. Not everyone will believe in you, Find the people who do and ask for their advice. Shoot for the stars. If you fail, you can at least say you got somewhere. Every time you meet someone, tell them what you do.

There may be an opportunity for you.
