Exploring Life & Business with Jade Baker of House of Wax

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Baker.

Jade, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After high school, I was attending community college and worked at the front desk for a day spa in Springfield, MO. I saw the job posting online and the schedule worked well for me so I thought nothing more of it and applied. I got the job and ended up working there for 2 years.

During that time, I learned so much about the industry and I met so many great people that were so passionate about their careers, and to my surprise it really intrigued me! After I graduated from college and moved to Colorado, I continued to work as a receptionist for a spa, but eventually, I decided it was time for me to take the next step and become an esthetician myself!

I enrolled in a program as soon as I could and for the past 4 years, I have been a licensed esthetician and service provider in Denver. I had excellent mentors just about every step of the way throughout my career and I really fell in love with a waxing studio I ended up working at. I loved how fast-paced my day was and how most people I get to meet are so grateful and appreciative of the services I provide for them!

When the opportunity came my way to move to St. Louis to be closer to family again and start my own business, I just knew I had to do it! I’m really excited to build a community here and create a space that empowers and excites other women too!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Looking back, there were certainly some challenges but some pretty great things happened too. When I enrolled in my esthetics program in Parker, I was commuting pretty far from Denver 6 days a week from 8 am-4 pm, and working as a barista in the evenings.

I was feeling maxed out and didn’t have much time for anything else! It was a really stressful time in my life but I persisted and I made it through my schooling. I was also trying to build a clientele in a new city where I really didn’t know anyone, which at the time I questioned if was even possible.

On the flip side, I would consider myself really lucky to have found my niche in this industry, after trial and error I finally found the avenue I enjoyed the most, waxing!! I always had amazing mentors and I learned a lot both in school and working for other people as an esthetician.

I feel aligned in my career right now and I think about how if it weren’t for me pushing past my self-made boundaries, I probably wouldn’t have applied to be a “speed waxer” and then who knows if I would have ever been compelled to start my own business.

As you know, we’re big fans of House of Wax. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
House of Wax is a luxury full-body waxing and skincare studio.

I specialize in speed waxing, and I offer lash, brow, and facial treatments as well! I am known for 15-minute women’s Brazilian and bikini waxing. I use mostly soft wax for everything I do and I think that is what sets House of Wax apart from other places!

I want to provide a safe space for women to come and feel accepted just how they are without fear of being judged!

What do you think about luck?
Luck has most definitely come into play in a lot of ways.

Especially, when it comes to the people I have met throughout the previous jobs that have ultimately led me to where I am now. I owe a big thank you to everyone who took a chance on hiring me and training me.

And to my family, friends, and coworkers along the way who instilled in me the courage to step out on my own and do this. Also every time I meet a new client that I “click” with and they end up becoming like a friend to me, I feel very lucky!
