Hi Julian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I immigrated to the United States with my sister, bringing only two pieces of luggage filled with clothes. We relocated to our father’s house in Georgia, hoping to start a new life. Coming from a third-world country, I wanted to secure a decent-paying job. I began working at McDonald’s and took on a part-time job as a janitor at the local hospital. Most of the money I earned went towards my bills. After several years of working two jobs, I realized I needed to progress. I felt lost and lacked a sense of direction in life. I yearned to be part of something bigger than myself and provide greater financial support for my family. A family friend mentioned the military to us, which sparked my interest. The next day, I visited the military recruiting office and spoke with the Air Force recruiter. As the recruiter explained the benefits and job opportunities in the Air Force, I immediately knew that this was exactly what I had been searching for. I decided to enlist, which has proven to be one of the biggest and best decisions ever. I completed my basic training in 2010 as a structural technician. While serving in the Air Force, I gained proficiency in various construction skills, such as carpentry, masonry, welding, locksmithing, and building maintenance. I have been stationed and deployed throughout my military career to numerous locations within the United States and overseas.

In April 2023, I embarked on my home inspection business as a part-time job, specifically helping home buyers, especially military families, navigate the home-buying process. Drawing from my background in military construction, I recognized the opportunity to utilize and leverage my skills, knowledge, and experience to aid families in making their most significant investments. I became a licensed home inspector around May 2023 and formed Plus Ultra Home Inspections LLC. Plus, Ultra is a Latin phrase that translates as “Further Beyond,” with metaphorical suggestions of taking risks and striving for excellence. As I always strive to be the best version of myself, I wanted to apply the same mindset in my business venture.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Military service is inherently challenging, and establishing a new business adds another layer of difficulty. Therefore, one of my primary struggles is balancing my time. Juggling between my military responsibilities, running the business, and attending to my family often presents significant time constraints. Another challenge I face is marketing and gaining traction in the local market. Many home inspection businesses rely on referrals from realtors, friends, and family to acquire clients. As a new business, building trust among the public and demonstrating the value of my services prove to be challenging tasks.

As you know, we’re big fans of Plus Ultra Home Inspections LLC. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
I am a licensed home inspector in Illinois, certified by Inspection Certification Associates and a InterNACHI Certified Professional Inspector. I aim to provide comprehensive and reliable home inspection services that empower potential buyers to make informed investment decisions. One of my key strengths is my ability to communicate complex findings clearly and concisely effectively. I believe in fostering transparent and open communication with my clients, ensuring they understand the inspection process and the significance of each observation. Providing detailed reports with comprehensive explanations and recommendations enables home buyers to negotiate confidently and make informed decisions. I also value the relationships I build with real estate professionals. I understand their need for reliable and efficient services that support their clients’ home-buying journeys. By maintaining professionalism, punctuality, and a strong work ethic, I aim to be a trusted partner for real estate professionals, helping them streamline their transactions and build trust with their clients. Having a flexible schedule and being able to accommodate clients on weekends is what sets me apart from others. Additionally, I offer free thermal imaging and a complimentary reinspection after repairs are completed. Lastly, I provide special discounts for all branches of the military and comprehensive warranties for all of my clients.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Absolutely! Having a mentor in your chosen field is invaluable. I have two mentors I can rely on, who have been instrumental in guiding me through my business ventures, particularly during the initial stages. Additionally, I am actively involved in several local associations that facilitate networking and provide opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals.
