Hidden Gems: Meet Lamar Woods of Woods&Tech

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lamar Woods.

Lamar, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My technology career was born from my interest in hard problems and the amount of fun I had using the internet. I felt that most subjects I studied in school were boring. When it came time for me to decide what I’d do in college, computers made me curious and felt challenging enough.

Halfway through college, I got hired by an entrepreneur who is building a software development company. What I spent my time on was a Restaurant Point Of Sale IPad App. That was a great start for me. I got to build so many different things that I was learning every single day. The startup we worked with gave me experience in going from ideas and designs to deploying on the app store and getting paying customers. From there, I moved around to other Mobile App Developer positions around Saint Louis including, Monsanto(Bayer), Allscripts and World Wide Technology. Now I spend my time working on my own business. Four years ago, I started Woods&Tech, which builds Mobile Apps and Websites for startups and business owners. Three years ago, I started SoHeart, a Drug and Alcohol Addiction Recovery Company with a Mobile App that helps people walk through recovery together.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The largest struggle was figuring out who I wanted to be. I had known since elementary school that I wanted to be massively successful. But the definition of success changed endlessly. Before college success was getting good grades, then it became having a good career and later it became your title. At this point, I know I want to be a successful business owner and wish this was my definition of success years ago. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself who I wanted to become. Other than the struggle to find my identity, my largest struggle was money. I didn’t grow up with much money but was determined to help the family with finances. By the end of college, I was taking care of the household and putting both my mom and myself through school. These cash issues held back my career in a lot of ways.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I view risk taking as a required part of life. It doesn’t matter what you want, you’ll need to take some level of risk to get it. In my opinion, people who regret their lives the most are those who have risked too little or too much. I’ve taken a lot of risks but my greatest risk is leaving my 9 to 5 mid pandemic. I knew that entrepreneurship was the life I wanted even though I wasn’t quite sure what would happen when I went for it. Now I’ve been out of the 9 to 5 for a while with my house, car, etc. at risk, I can say that it most definitely isn’t easy. But without those risks, I wouldn’t have had the ability to do the type of work I’m doing. I wouldn’t be building the same future and my future is what’s most important to me.
