Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Stolze
Hi Melissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always been an avid fitness and health enthusiast. Prior to branching out into the fitness industry, I worked in Finance at Boeing for twelve years gaining in-depth knowledge and experience at the corporate level. Feeling the pressure of being the last mom to pick up my child from daycare was beginning to weigh heavily on me. The guilt of my son spending the majority of his days at daycare was overwhelming. I didn’t want to miss out on being there for him, I realized it was time for a change.
I discovered barre3 after stepping away from a long-time finance career to focus on my family and pursue my passion for fitness. Opening my barre3 studio has allowed me to merge my passion for both business and fitness into one job! I foster a community centered on inclusivity, encouragement, and empowerment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Throughout my 12-year journey as a boutique fitness studio entrepreneur, I have faced a myriad of challenges that have shaped my experience and contributed to my growth. One of the most significant hurdles was the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many businesses, my studio was forced to adapt to an unprecedented situation that tested our resilience and creativity. Transitioning to virtual classes, implementing safety protocols, and maintaining a sense of community became essential to our survival during those trying times.
In addition to the pandemic, my journey as the first barre3 franchise studio in the Midwest presented its own set of challenges. When I first opened my doors in 2013, the barre3 concept was relatively unfamiliar to many in the region. Educating potential clients about the benefits of barre3 workouts and building a loyal customer base required strategic marketing and a commitment to creating an inviting atmosphere. I poured my heart and soul into developing a strong community, which ultimately became the backbone of our studio.
Today, I am proud to say that there are over 198 barre3 studios in operation, a testament to the growing popularity of this wellness movement. This expansion not only highlights the success of the barre3 brand but also serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and adaptability in entrepreneurship. My journey has taught me that challenges can lead to opportunities for growth, innovation, and community building.
As I reflect on these experiences, I am grateful for the lessons learned and the incredible individuals I have met along the way. The journey of a boutique fitness studio entrepreneur is filled with ups and downs, but it is the connections we make and the lives we touch that truly define success. Embracing change and remaining steadfast in our mission can lead to remarkable outcomes, even in the face of adversity.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a boutique fitness company that values relationships even more than exercise to be healthy. It’s a method of exercising that is about being mindful and present in your body versus trying to change it. Barre3 has transformed from a traditional workout regimen into a dynamic movement by millions who embrace body positivity and empowerment.
In barre3 classes, you won’t hear us using language around changing your body to look different. Rather than exercising to change your body, which leads to shame and pain, we exercise to be honest and present in our bodies just as they are. The language and philosophy prioritize acceptance over alteration. Participants are encouraged to engage with their bodies as they are, fostering a supportive environment that discourages feelings of shame or discomfort often associated with the pursuit of an unattainable ideal. Rather than focusing on changing one’s appearance, the emphasis is on cultivating honesty and presence in the body.
In essence, barre3 is not just about fitness; it’s a celebration of self-acceptance and a community that empowers individuals to redefine their relationship with exercise and their bodies.
Barre3 offers a diverse range of classes to cater to different fitness levels and preferences. The barre3 Signature classes, available in both 45 and 60-minute formats, provide a balanced workout that combines strength, cardio, and mindfulness. Additionally, the b3 Strength and b3 Mindful Flow classes further enhance the experience, allowing participants to explore their physical capabilities while embracing a mindful approach to movement.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Surround yourself with a community of like-minded individuals!
What has worked well for me is that barre3 is a distinctive franchise that shines as a women-owned business, fostering an empowering atmosphere for both its owners and clients. This ownership model encourages women to connect, collaborate, and uplift each other, creating a dynamic and supportive community. The shared values among the owners nurture a culture of motivation and solidarity, allowing for the open exchange of experiences and insights. This sense of belonging not only enriches the business journey but also enhances the overall well-being of the women involved, transforming barre3 into more than just a fitness franchise—it’s a nurturing network of individuals dedicated to personal and collective growth.
