Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaliyah Ross
Hi Jaliyah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started when I was just in high school, I want to say toward the end of my junior year. I started off as just a makeup artist but after graduating high school in 2019 I went straight on to study in esthiology where I obtained my esthetician license. By 2020 I was licensed to do makeup and much more. During my study at cosmetology school I picked up on the skill of waxing, eye brow tinting and more, so that became apart of my resume as well. Back in senior year I studied photography as well, so now being graduated and a licensed esthetician with photography experience, I thought to myself that “This could be something big”. With faith, work and dedication it indeed became something great. I was now doing makeup and pictures in the same threshold, which was not only great money wise, but convenient for my clients. Fast forwarding, I am now hosting my own poetry nights and I’ve also stepped into the role of creative directing photoshoot projects, while also being the makeup artist as well. Sometimes I model and sometimes I gather models myself. To get to where I am now it took a lot of trial & error, change of environment, personal growth, and getting into the right places so networking could be made possible and naturally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been all smooth, but that’s a given when you’re doing something great. Being that Liyah Beats have been my only occupation of work, EVER during and after high school, there have indeed been times where I wasn’t sure if this was something I could continue to do full time for the sake of stability and money especially when there’s days or weeks with little to no clientele. Being that the town I reside in can be slow & demographically challenging, I’ve went through the troubles of studio/shop searching as well especially in this economy and I have yet to find one where I could successfully fill in booths with other artists or one where I can do all my lines of work in. The challenges don’t stop but the passion and opportunities has continued to flow!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As I mentioned, I started off as a makeup artist and photographer, after years of personal growth, networking and putting all of my artistic interests & crafts to use I’ve picked up on modeling here and there, creative directing and being the host of my own formal poetry night “Snaps & Jazz” every few months while still specializing in makeup/brows. I’m most known for my beauty work and my unique creative style/work. What I’m most proud of is all of the lives I touch and inspire while doing what I’m passionate about. That’s what I feel matters the most when doing your field of work. Yes money is rewarding, but knowing you’ve given someone hope, a new perspective on life, or just a listening ear is the real God sent reward and that should always be your ultimate goal. Being passionate and able to touch lives is what I feel sets me apart. These days you just don’t come across people who are working out of passion and love for what they do, often times people are just working to be paid with the least of interest in what they do. By loving what I do, my clients and others that support me can feel and see the love through either the services I provide or the work I set out. This allows people to be more vulnerable about their lives while also keeping them confident and ready for their next appointment or my next piece of work! From what a lot of clients have told me, I provide a comforting space for them with pretty exceptional skills to add on. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
If you’re a hair stylist you could do hair on a client and contact me to do the makeup. If you’re a photographer and need a model, makeup artist or creative director I can be one or all of those things. If you’re an instrumental artist we can potentially collab and I can have you apart of one of my poetry nights. If you want to support me you could simply book a service, catch tickets when I host another poetry night or just simply share my work & root for me!
