Today we’d like to introduce you to Karthika Krishna.
Hi Karthika, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I have always been a documenter of people, memories, and places. Truth be told, I never pursued photography as a profession. Life led me on a different path; it made me work amidst creative professionals, artists, and movie magicians. I loved how ideas and concepts flowed into the everyday world but I wasn’t the person behind those ideas, I was only helping people bring their ideas to life.
I am from India and have spent most of my life in Mumbai. I got married, moved here, and decided to pursue this lifelong dream of mine. My subjects are very personal as they are pictures that have been taken by me over the last ten years and are of places I traveled and people I met.
I use modern digital techniques to manipulate my photographs with an aim to convey a mood, thought, or emotion with the use of different colors and textures.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth at all because I realized there are so many challenges that an artist faces. Personally, for me, I had to leave everything I knew behind, from people to relationships that I had built over the years to adjusting to a new country and its culture. It’s very romantic when you are spending some time in a city for a holiday but when you leave behind an entire ecosystem and move to another place, it takes time for you to truly feel at home. So, this feeling of displacement is very real and my work reflects some of that. I try to use pieces from my life, memories, places, ideas and put them together in a new way to show what I feel.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist, photographer, and a website designer, all rolled into one. I also have a marketing background (I used to market Bollywood movies back in India) and I serve on the Board of Governors at the Saint Louis Artists Guild. Though mostly, I am a documenter of memories. That’s how I like to look at myself.
I am very instinctive and that reflects in my work as well. I like how shapes, paint, and texture all come together to create an expression. I really enjoy taking pictures. And over the years, I have had the opportunity to travel to different cities and countries. So, I take a picture that reflects a certain time, mood, or emotion and attempt to present it in a new way.
What’s next?
I want to keep creating. That’s the plan for 2022 and for the future. I also LOVE talking to other artists and entrepreneurs and have been fortunate to design some of their websites. So, I am hoping to continue doing that.
