Life & Work with Reuben Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reuben Jones.

Hi Reuben, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I was raised first in U-City and then moved to Florissant. My family was just as heavily involved in church as in music. My pastor’s father would make music every time he got off work. His focus was to be original and do something nobody else did. He always aimed to give God glory in the songs that he wrote. I still remember all of those “rehearsals” in the living room. My mom and sister sang, my older brother was the rapper, and I, the youngest, would dance and sing along. I would say that through them, a seed was planted in me. I knew I would someday make my music and create my way. I fell in love with music. Fast forward to my college days, I started making music for personal gain, but God had other plans. He drew me back to himself, and I began to make music for a greater purpose; to share the gospel. Through Jesus, there is saving grace, hope, love, peace, and so much more. I can’t keep it to myself. Now I put it all in the music—one song at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life always throws curve balls and has plenty of bumps in the road. Most times, it’s a balancing act between responsibilities and creativity. Not to mention the fact that bad things happen unexpectedly. Overcoming trials in my life was my biggest inspiration for the story I tell in my latest project, “Endurance LP.” Life gives me the greatest material. Creating music allows me to be transparent about my struggles. Hopefully, it helps others overcome theirs.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been writing raps for as long as I can remember. I’ve come a long way since making songs on my laptop behind closed doors. I released my first EP, “Renegade,” in 2017. I’m the type of artist that always tries to outdo myself, and that was the aim of my latest project, “Endurance LP.” It took a few years of persistence and reflection to create this one. I pushed myself, and I am proud of how it came out. “Endurance LP” walks us through a storyline representing life-based on actual events. The music starts confident and easygoing, then suddenly, it all changes in a single moment. I walk you through the ups, the downs, and the slow ride back up the mountain top. The overall tone is a versatile mixture of raps and melodies that deliver the message “never give up.” I’m always striving to be the best artist I can be. I aim never to limit myself. I do what I do with the hopes of conveying the message of my faith in a captivating way every time. I am working on new music right now, and I am digging more profound than ever before. I know God gave me this gift, so I use it for His glory. I want to share my heart with the world. I believe that what comes from the heart reaches the heart, so stay tuned!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I have learned a lot of life lessons, but one that stands out to me the most is never to compromise the message to gain more praise from the world. Stay the course as long as God is with me, and I have the support of my beautiful wife and daughter. That’s all I need.
