Today we’d like to introduce you to Beau Bommarito.
Hi Beau, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I personally was born and raised in St. Louis. I played basketball at CBC High School and went on to play for Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. I always loved the entertainment industry and grew up wanting to be an actor, but strayed away from it as I got more into basketball and other things I thought to be considered more “popular” for high school and people my age. Our YouTube Channel, DaGuys, really grew from the friendships we had at CBC. There’s about 5-7 of us who stayed in touch after all this time and are incredibly close friends. When we would hangout or go to different places, we knew we were the most entertaining people there and having the most fun. Once we all came back to St. Louis after college, we stayed close friends and wanted to do something bigger. When COVID hit and we had much more free time, my brother Blake finally decided to pull the trigger and start making videos. In my mind, we’ve always been very creative, funny, and entertaining. We just had to find a way to communicate that effectively through YouTube and social media. Two years from shooting that first video, I think we are really starting to figure everything out and put it all together. While we continue to add more team members and get others involved, my brother, my best friends, and I will always be at the core of DaGuys.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but that is obvious for everyone that tries to start a business or create something on their own. For us, the hardest thing was just getting started. Trying to start a YouTube channel about yourself in the middle of St. Louis is not initially looked upon well by your peers, coworkers, etc. We got made fun of often, and people were quick to label us as “just some rich white kids from Ladue that think they are cool” or variations of that stereotype. We’ve heard it all, but if you really know us, or just talk to us for 5 minutes, you could quickly see that could not be further from the truth. Another thing was just not having many other Youtubers or creators in St. Louis. It makes it tougher to collaborate or grow quickly. There’s been a ton of challenges and learning curves that we’ve had to get through, but for me, that’s all part of the journey. One of the key lessons that has stuck with me from my Emory Basketball Coach, Jason Zimmerman, is to enjoy the journey. We wouldn’t be where we were today if it wasn’t for the many perceived struggles and failures that we had to get through for us to grow and transform into better versions of ourselves. I am grateful for what we’ve had to get through because it makes us that much better.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
DaGuys is our YouTube and Social Media platform. We are a group of lifelong friends that are committed to spreading positivity, highlighting some of the best people and talent in the city of St. Louis, and changing the world through our content and creativity. The videos that have been doing the best for us are our basketball content, where we will go to local parks, leagues, etc. or even travel the country to play different people. Me or someone else on the team will typically have a mic on for the games and we’ll be talking trash, giving funny one-liners, or just talking through the game having a great time. One of our most famous videos is where we dressed up as characters from the Will Ferrel movie “Semi-Pro” and played in a Men’s League, quoting classic lines from the film while still beating the other team. While basketball videos maybe what we are most known for, we do a variety of content from lifestyle/travel, to pranks, reactions, really anything that we are inspired by. The main “theme” would be our friend group and the fun things we have going on and trying to share some of that fun and great moments with the rest of the world.
Our friend group and personalities is what really sets us apart. Rather than just have one creator or person try to do everything, there’s a whole team of us working hard and contributing in their own unique way. We have also just always been very funny and entertaining, we just had to figure out a way to convey that with the world. That’s how I know we are going to be something huge because we’ve always been this way. Everything is genuine, and you get to see us for who we really are. As we continue to gain a bigger audience and learn more about YouTube, social media, and creating content in general, we’re only going to continue to grow.
How do you define success?
This is always a tough question for me because in my opinion you should always be growing and working towards new things. I am successful right now in the eyes of who I wanted to be 2-3 years ago, but that doesn’t mean I am content and can sit around all day. There is still so much more I want to get done. Success is more than just finances or how much money you have in your bank account. Success is working toward being the best version of yourself. If I can lay down in bed at the end of the day and say I did everything I possibly could to work towards my goals, I consider that a success.
I think the biggest issue with people is less about how they define success and more about how they think about failure. People should see “failure” as a good thing because you learned something from it. Failure is really just a lesson you learned. The most successful people are not those that never fail, but those that can “fail”, learn something from it, and quickly move on to the next thing with that lesson. That timing/moment between the lesson and moving on the to next iteration is what I try to work on most.
