Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Fischer.
Hi Carla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2002, we decided to start an amusement company servicing schools, churches, companies, etc., with mechanical and inflatable rides for events they were having. It didn’t take a little while for us to approach Eckert’s Orchard to allow us to provide our equipment for their guests. After about 17 years of a wonderful relationship with their team, here came Covid. As with many people, Covid changed many lives, some good and some not. For our family, Bob, Carla, Claire, & Sam, it ended up being good because it allowed time for reflection, resulting in our decision to start our own Agritourism facility, Bloomsdale Fun Farm in Bloomsdale, MO. We broke ground in late October 2020 and opened in September 2021. Like many such farms, we focus on Fall activities, including pick your Pumpkins, corn maze, putt-putt golf, trike tracks, corn pit, 85′ three lane fiberglass slide, mechanical rides, wagon rides, trackless train ride, jump pillow, ball games, gaga ball and much more. We offer tons of food and drink, nonalcohol and alcohol, along with daily live music. Every year, during the off-season, we work tirelessly to improve our facility to “wow” our guests. This Fall, 2023, is our third season, and we cannot wait to see all the smiles.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Our biggest learning curve has been food and concessions. After two years of bumps, we outsourced some concessions to two vendors: Concessionaire Extraordinaire and our local KC, Bloomsdale KC. We continue making kettle corn, cotton candy, apple cider donuts, and drinks as a family.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I was a high school Chemistry and Biology for 18 years. It was a wonderful experience, but once we started a family, we decided for me to make a move. I’ve always been very motivated and focused on success. Once I left teaching and had time to think about other ways to find success, I discovered my desire to think outside the box and reach heights. With that, I pushed to no end to start and make our amusement company, Fischer Kiddie Rides, a success. I am most known for my extreme work ethic and ability to interject fun into the mix. I am proud of the relationship my husband, Bob, and I raised our two children, Claire, 25, and Sam, 22. Self-employment has taught them the rewards of hard work, and that success comes in many forms. They realize that there are many means of financially supporting yourself. We are also prideful of teaching them to live conservatively, invest wisely, and live within their financial means; it also works for business success! My ability to work alongside my staff instead of in front of or above them sets me apart from many. We are incredibly proud of our returning staff and guests.
What’s next?
We will continue to build Bloomsdale Fun Farm, making it one of the largest in the area. Currently, we are teaching Claire and Sam how to run a successful business so that we can “take the back seat” as part of the support team.
