Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Gibson.
Hi Derrick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was always the creative type. I started with music and playing guitar at age 12. I was a founding member of STL-based deathcore band “Battalion” from 2010 to 2014.
During that time, I was also into music production and photography, but my focus was primarily on the band. After leaving the band I began to focus more on photography.
I had a great opportunity to dive deeper when I received my first digital camera (Nikon D3200) as a Christmas gift in 2014. My stepfather was stationed in Italy for the USAF, so I had the opportunity to visit on several occasions and explore most of Europe.
My camera went everywhere with me and I really fell in love with the art form during that time. I used the Nikon as my primary camera until 2021 when I decided I was ready to take my photography to the next level and upgrade to a Sony mirrorless camera.
Since getting the new camera, photography has truly become my passion. I go out shooting as much as I can every single weekend. Unfortunately, this isn’t my full-time job, yet, but I’m working on making full-time a reality.
I currently work as a production supervisor for a beverage manufacturer in STL. Thankfully, I’m off every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so I still have plenty of time for creative activities on the weekend!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t a smooth road in the beginning. My very first camera (Pentax K1000) was stolen from my car in early 2013. I didn’t have a camera for nearly 2 years!
We’ve been impressed with Derrick Gibson Photography and Video, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am primarily a photographer but I also dabble in video. I love to shoot landscapes, architecture, animals, and people. I wouldn’t say I have a specific niche at this time. I love to shoot anything I find interesting. To explain my style, I focus heavily on composition and color.
I find these are the most useful tools for me to make an image with my own unique look. What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and down-to-earth personality. I’m easy to work with and talk to. As far as services go, I’m willing to take on just about any project.
I have done corporate headshots, newborns, engagements, families, live music, sports, family reunions, and just about anything you can think of. If you need a photographer of any kind, I’m your guy!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m an avid Instagram and Youtube user. I find a lot of inspiration from fellow photographers and creatives on those platforms.
