Meet Elena Jove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena Jove.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I come from a family where art is a staple; my father and brother are both artists as well, and several of my uncles are musicians and DJs. My brother and I drew a lot together as kids and teens, but when I went to college I studied biology. My undergrad degree is a BS in Ecology, Evolutions & Organismal Biology, and my MS is in Environmental Conservation. It didn’t work out for me, and I lost some marbles in the beginning of 2018. With the help of my therapist, I returned to drawing as a coping & self-soothing mechanism. Turns out I really enjoyed it, and I began to attend sketch nights at Apotheosis. I got divorced right before the pandemic and moved into my own space in March 2020. And from there, art became a daily ritual in my life. I focused on creation instead of self-destruction. I have been riding that ever since, and have found myself with a small business. My goal is to create and support community and continue to practice my craft. All while finding joy, of course.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Mental illness has been a big factor in why art was set aside in the first place, and alcohol abuse. It has been a long road of learning who I am and what I want in this life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Most of my personal work is macabre self-portraits, but I also draw a lot of animals and plants. I have a cartoonish style, which goes over well for commissioned pet portraits. I feel I am equally parts creepy and cute.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Mi familia, of course. Without seeing my family members succeed and build lives around their arts, I might not have known it was possible. My partner, Samuel, is my biggest fan and my greatest support. They are my #1 teammate, they help keep me on task, take care of me, and love me as I am. My brother, Alex, is my best friend and support system. He is an inspiration to me and a great guide. My friend Starshine, she has given me a safe space to create with no matter what medium. I look up to her so much in that she is a well of creativity and sparkles. Also, the art & popup community in St. Louis, welcomed me with open arms, and included me in their events and markets. It’s been a wonderful experience meeting other creatives in the city.
