Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Mitchell.
Hi Emily, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been interested in photography, and a photography unit in my middle school art class heightened that interest even more! I started my family at a young age, so I never felt like I had the time to devote anything to it; I just enjoyed taking photos of my kids! I eventually started occasionally taking family photos for friends, and when my youngest child started preschool decided that I would try to make a business out of it. I did not expect much to come of it, just something to get me out of the house from time to time and make a little extra money. But over the last 6 years, it has continued to grow and grow each year! I was even able to open my first studio in March of 2021 and have loved utilizing that space for sessions and product photography!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that the hardest part is self doubt. Comparing myself to other photographers is always hard. It is hard to compare yourself to someone who has a different style, has more followers on their social media pages, or has more bookings than you. I have had to remind myself to only compare myself to where I have been. I was also very concerned with how Covid would affect my business and that it might cause a setback, but luckily after the original shut down when I was allowed to start shooting again, people have continued to be supportive and my business has continued to grow!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I mostly shoot families and seniors, but also offer weddings and newborn sessions. I shoot and edit in a bright and airy style, keeping true to natural colors. I try to not only capture people in poses, but the emotions and connections between the people. During sessions with families, we will play games and have fun to try to create natural smiles and truly show the love within the family. My main goal of a session is to make sure that everyone is enjoying themselves and has fun while capturing photos that you will treasure for a lifetime!

I submitted a suggestion of my friend Dana Ely. She lost her husband to COVID the Wednesday after Christmas. He was 53. She is left to support her daughter Sophia 17 and her son Benicio 13. She is now left in the role of single parent and provider. She has a photography business she is working to grow as a means of support. She is a phenomenal photographer and does our family photos every year. It would be a tremendous help to her business if you could write an article about her. She has been through so much and really is one of the most caring, honest, thoughtful loving people that I have the to pleasure to call a friend.
