Meet Jen Guss of Lindenwood Park Neighborhood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Guss.

Jen Guss

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I was raised in South City and moved back 5 years ago. I have been an active part of the STL artist/maker scene for 20+ years, doing multiple art fairs a year until my cancer battle in 2018 and COVID-19. I’ve always dreamed of having a place where I can support other local artists/makers, offer creative workshops, and put on artisan events. In 2022, after opening a salon with friends, our real estate broker contacted us about available retail space, so that’s where Down the Rabbit Hole was conceived.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had many personal challenges throughout my life and career, but (with my determination and dedication) this venture has just fallen into place. My husband and I did all the painting, and I did all the cleaning and setting up.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an autodidact, and I’ve taught myself all the skills I need to master my creative works. I have no formal art or business background. I’m very proud of these accomplishments. I like to work with found objects and vintage materials. I believe art should create a reaction. I love the reactions I get from people who view my artwork. They feel nostalgic, happy, and joyful from my whimsical creations. Several of my pieces have won awards at local galleries. I’m known for my bold, colorful, wearable art and steampunk collection.

My boutique, Down the Rabbit Hole, features more than 40 local artists and makers, and highlights “budding young artists” each month. The young artists are 13 or younger, and are permitted to sell their creations in the shop for 6 weeks. I have a strong desire to uplift and support artists of all ages!
I also support local nonprofits, through donation collections and donating a portion of sales to food pantries, local LGTBQ+ resources and community groups that support the unhoused.

Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I gather inspiration from my creative network.

I’d also like to say how supportive my friends and colleagues have been throughout this process. I am beyond grateful for the support and encouragement I’ve received since opening the boutique. I am blessed to have an amazing, and creative network. Dreams really do come true!
